Quick Questions on Tri Bike/ Quintana Roo History.

I'm working on a project right now and I need some info that I can't recall off the top of my head and couldn't find via a Google search.

1. There was a fortified version of the Quintana Roo Kilo that featured a yellow (and in very limited numbers, black) paint scheme and an airfoil shaped carbon fiber fairing between the top tube and down tube that was made for Quintana Roo by HED. The frame was Easton aluminum. What was this version of the Kilo called?

2. Prior to that version of the Kilo I seem to recall Ves Mandaric hand-making an up-spec version of the Kilo that was painted green. I seem to recall it as a "fortified" verson of the Kilo that was limited production. What was that called?

3. Did the original Superform have an 80 degree seat tube angle?

The answer to number one was the Redstone, I recall drooling all over it in catalogs and person. Cant help with the others.

Dan's own words on #3...

"The biggest difference between Ralph's bike and mine was the severity of the seat angle. We used 80-degrees, Ralph used 90-degrees. His bike was called the Desert Princess -- named after the famous duathlon in Palm Springs -- and was built by Holland Cycles. Our Quintana Roo was called the Superform, ..."

and as for #2...are you thinking of your old Private Reserve? or maybe this is the answer to #1, based on the info in the link...the (bigger, imho) identifier of the redstone was the seatstay cluster fairing.

Close, but the Redstone was a different bike altogether with a unique rear fairing. The bike I am asking about (with the front fairing only) precedes the Redstone. There was also a green one ridden by Spencer Smith. It may have been the "Kilo Private Reserve".

yup, redstone was orange and the fairing went over the rear brake area. i think the bike you're looking for was the "kilo private reserve". had a fairing behind the headset, maybe a slightly 'aero' downtube, and quite possibly that special QR narrow fork? i think back in the day someone like triathlete mag called it "the perfect hawaii bike." anyway, here you are:

Bingo- that is the photo I have also in a google search. It was the vaunted "Kilo Private Reserve".

There were a very, very few black Redstones made, but not many. That was the P4 well before its time. I spotted one at a race some time ago in Ohio and grabbed this photo of it. It may have been Caesar Creek.

Yup, that Kilo Private Reserve was the lusted bike of the mid 90's.

....Then they came out with that super sweet black TeQuilo with the gold lettering and gold chain.....

...then the Redstone? Not sure what happend there :-)

I stand corrected, it was the version of the Kilo with the fairing behind the headtube only.
While on the topic of vintage QR's does anyone recall the name of the "mountain bike" that was designed with tri geometry for training on dirt roads?

My first tri bike was a one-off QR that Dan built for Andy Carlson (if I remember right...it has been a while) which I aquired from him. It was a steel frame/fork that weighed in right at 2 pounds! It had a blue and silver specled paint job. The seat stays were about as big around as a pencil. Wonder if Dan remembers this bike. Also had a one-off QR wetsuit bought from the same person that had long sleeves and short legs. Both served me well for many years.

On ebay along with 3 or 4 superforms . If anyne wants it hurry only 4 hrs left and you might be able to get it for 175.00. The redstone is not on any longer.

Wow. If that eBay bike is 2k model year, they really shook things up for the Private Reserve a model year later:

On the 58cm model, the "aero" part of the seat-tube extended all the way to the top, rather than rounding off like in this pic.

the bike you're thinking of is the Quintana Roo Panamint. a good concept, i think - most people ride a mix of road/fire road/light trails, anyway - but a total frankenstein of a bike! came spec'd with a C2 aerobar and even aero MTB wheels, if memory serves.

Sorry for the bump...I'm new to the forum have wondered about my Quintana Roo since I got it in 2003. When I bought it I was told it was 2 or 3 years old and was NOS. I had the option for 650c or 700c wheels and I chose 650 but was mistakenly sent a 700c version. It has a 1" head tube and the same fork as the bike above. I had a choice at the time for this bike or the redstone for a little more money. I have a friend with a yellow one like the one referenced above. Mind doesn't have any many decals and doesn't have a mode name on it? Is it technically a Kilo Private Reserve?

this particular bike in your picture is not a tri bike. it's a road race bike. at least, that's the frame. if my memory serves, the bike's model name is "borrego".

Interesting...I had my suspicions that it was road geometry but have never gone to the trouble to verify. But didn't the tri geometry bikes that look like mine (Kilo Private Reserve?) also have round tubes? My memory may be off since I haven't seen the bike in years, but my friends was yellow with 650c wheels, round tubes (I believe) and looked almost just like mine with the exception of the decals and geometry.

Are there catalogs anywhere out there with geometry, stock pictures, etc?
