Ford's 302 is a motor that lots can be done with for very little money. I had one 30 years ago that would do 12's in the 1/4 mile in a van

"Please post a pic of your car."

Sure. Which one do you want me to dig up - my 64 TR4, 69 Spitfire, 69 MGB, 67 Mini-Cooper S, 70 MG Midget, 60 Porsche 356, or 63 Porsche 356? Also had a 66 Corvair and early 240Z for a short while.

Dude, read my posts on this thread - I only like classic cars and intend to get another one once my son is finished college. And like I said - absolutely zero interest in modern Porsches. I'd much rather go to the vintage race event at Watkins Glen than watch you guys. Get over it.

I used to have a Factory Five as well, kit/frame #4408 IIRC. I had a 302 as well, with the IRS setup, but I'd go with the 3-link rear end if I had to do it again. I had it painted 2003 Lexux Blue. I dream about that car, I cried the day I sold it....damn ex wife....

I've have a pretty unusual assortment.
The John Deere 755 Crawler-Loader - a great, but very slow, form of stress relief at 2-8mph.

A beater, "work truck" - '04 Tundra.

And the '05 NSX for the turns and for the occasional 'going to be late for work unless I drive the car' -

And the '63 Ranchero - to fix up a little bit and take to local races - yet to happen.

Oddly, I had an E46 M3...and passed on the new M5 being as I have two co-workers who got them...both burst to flames road side "JRA". The A3 is not as bad as a Ford Escort...but close. If you pull the parking brake...it will wear the leather from the arm wrest. I glued some felt to the lower seam of my arm wrest to protect the brake leather.

(JRA means Just Riding Along)

Um, read the title of the thread, its says "Show me your ride...the one with the engine!". So if you are such a savant, and you love cars, show us the one you own and play with now, today. Go ahead, post the pic! :)

You can like classic cars all you want. I also love classic cars too. The early P-Cars are something special I agree. But to diss a FACTORY BUILT Porsche racecar is something I just will not let you get away with. NOTHING beats a factory car in terms of speed, handling, and most importantly safety. You are the one that needs to get over it. Show us your current ride please. Thank you!

OK, you win your point. I don't have a classic car at the moment. My last one was a Triumph TR8 which I sold awhile ago. I'm waiting for my son to finish college before I treat myself to another toy. With him in college, I don't even think about buying a new bicycle let alone a car.

Sure the new cars are absolutely amazing, but its the nostolgia factor for people who are into classic cars. In the 1970's we used to go to a car race somewhere practically every weekend. Now I might go once every few years. I went to the Lemans series race at Mosport a few years ago and must say it is a great series.

Another reason we like the older cars is because you can actually work on them yourselves. They are much simpler mechanically.

Mia Culpa. You know its the off season here in the Norh East when we are arguing about cars instead of being out there training! :)

Like you, I have been a car guy since the day I was born. My first car was a BMW 2002tii. What a hoot! I took it to the track when I was 18, and have been on the track every year since. I also had a 73 911T, and regret having sold it. I currently race and instruct with PCA. My last student had a 2009 997 Turbo. He let me drive it! Wow, a technological marvel that just rips on the track!!

I do agree with you about the early cars. There are so simple yet so effective. They got it right then, and it still shows today. And yes, you can work on them yourself.

Triathlon is a recent addiction thats better for you and costs a lot less than playing with cars!

Good luck with getting you kid out of college and getting your butt back in a classic. Till then, train hard! :)

I was looking for a 60's El Camino or the Ford you are showing when I found the '63 Valiant. One of my other drivers is a '77 MB300d. This is a great car for puttering around town doing errands

"BMW 2002tii. ..... 73 911T"

Those are two cars I'd put on my list of desireable classics.

there is an endurance race at NJMP (karting) at the end of this month if any interest as it is the off season ;) I did a 6 hour one a few months back and it was pretty intense. There is something pure about racing a kart rather then having the advantage of technology to save your ass :)

Pre-kids (not a small bumper tii, but I paid cash for it my junior year in college and also had a 3 year old Jetta at the time):

Post-kids - 126,000 miles on the clock and looks and runs like the day I got it. Could not be happier with a car:

When did PCA and POC become so difficult to get your car on the track? I also got my first Porsche new when I was 18 and would enter driving events with POC at Ontario (where Otis Chandler's 917 came up behind me and scared me to death) and Riverside. Back then PCA did not even require you to have a 5-point harness. Now you have a lengthly qualification process.

I remember when the turbos first came out. Someone drove from Colorado to Riverside to race it. Those were the days when you actually had 917s participating.

I think this had to do with a lot of people possibly getting hurt by over estimating their driving ability. I don't know what prompted this back then as I am a youngster, but went through the SCCA process. Needless to say I wouldn't push as hard in any car without a good helmet, at least a roll bar and a good pair of belts. At the rate that safety technology is evolving though, we should see some pretty good inovations in the years to come. I mean look at how far the Hans device has come..

The good old days when you are young and fearless. No roll bar and only an open face helmet with a good pair of belts.

Haha, yeah we all have them but I think it is important to be cognizant of the possible danger. I walked away from a few bad crashes one of which was a motorcycle crash at Pocono so I am greatful for that. Driver safety has evolved greatly in the past years. For example look at the WRC cars, the roll cage in those things is nutty, and it saves lives, specially when they slide sideways into a tree at great rates of speed.

Raptor,

I don't see there being a great degree of difficulty to attend a drivers education (de) event with PCA. AFAIK, all you need is a P-Car, a tech sheet saying your car is mechanically sound, a helmet, and an application/check. Now, I do know that getting in to the green (newbie) group has been difficult only because of many applications in the past. Its been wildly popular. The economy these days makes getting in easier. You pay, you go!

Answer your question?

Don't you need to do three autocrosses in the previous year?

Also, what mods do I need to do to car? I assume I need to add a 5-point harness. Is there any 5-point harness systems that can use the existing bolts in the car? Are fire extinguishers still required?

Wrangler unlimited (4 door) -- tri mobile and commuter
430 spider -- YEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAA mobile

On the "real porsche" question, I would say that if you want reliability, comfort, A/C, CD player, etc. anything starting with the 996 is a good bet, though I'm not a fan of the SUV and the 4-door sedan. If you want a track car to throttle-steer, go air-cooled and as light weight as possible. Different cars for different purposes.
