NYC Marathon 2020
Is anyone else going to try registering for NYC on the 30th? I have a qualifying time in a half marathon that's 4 minutes under what I need, but in a non NYRR race. Has anyone had experience getting into NYC based on a qualifying time in a 'non guaranteed' race?

I was supposed to run NYC when Hurricane Sandy devastated the area in 2012, so I am hoping for no natural disasters should I be able to race.

I'm planning on applying via the same standard, but this will be the first time doing it.

The way I've understood it is that time under is irrelevant. It's either first come/first serve if you are under or it's a just a smaller lottery you are more likely to get in.

I'm entered in the general lottery, I'm slow. But just got this with my general entry.

Time-Qualifying Standards

If you believe you have guaranteed entry through time qualification at a non-NYRR race, please email help@nyrr.org with the name of the event, distance, official finish time, and a link to the results prior to 11:59 p.m. ET on February 13. As a reminder, the race must have been completed between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.

I got in on a half marathon qualifying time and know about a dozen others that have done the same (13.1 or 26.2) with none ever being turned away. The rumor is that they've never had enough non-NYRR qualified runners to reach the limit where some would be left out in the cold.

I've run NYC 4 times so far. I've gotten in 3 times with half marathon qualifying times and once with a marathon qualifying time. None were NYRR races. I intend to enter this year with a half marathon time.

Ok - sounds like if I do try to register on the 30th the chances are pretty good. Any idea what time registration actually opens? Is it 12:01 AM, 10:00 AM, some other time? The only info on registration I could find is that it opens on the 30th.

This is the 50th anniversary, or 50th running (adjustment related to Sandy), so that might affect the demand for this year’s race

The non-NYRR time qualifying spots DO fill up sometimes. I registered with a time qualifier on the last day in 2016, but struck out when I delayed making my decision last year! They are first-come, first-served, regardless of how far under the standard you are. I imagine this year will be higher demand since it’s the 50th anniversary, so if you plan on using a time qualifier, definitely register early. (Not “wait by a computer for the second it opens” early, just sometime that first day to be safe.)

Noon ET.

This is from the email I received today. Also, note that you don't need to send a separate email with your qualifying time/info.

I was able to register around 12:30 via the time standard. My friend is telling me he didn't get the time standard option. Did they sell out of them?

Went to the website around 12:30 and I currently have an estimated 50 min wait time. I hope the time standard spots aren't already taken.

I got through to registration around 1:15 and it said that all non-guaranteed qualifying spots were already taken :(

I guess being the 50th anniversary there must have been more demand than normal - that wasn't a factor in trying to get in for me.

Anyone else having trouble with this? Since yesterday, I click on the link and it directs me to the page for registering a child, but I can't apply myself.

Same thing here. I planned to get in via qualifier but never imagined they slots would be gone in 30 minutes. I was in surgery and didn't sit down to the computer until about 2pm EST. Too late! Oh well. So then I was trying to register for the general lottery and kept getting the child registration thing....but I realized I was already in the lottery because I had previously entered my info back in November when they were doing some sort of special, initial lottery for the 50y celebration - I don't recall all the details.

Not trying to get in, but looked at the qualifying times for the race, wow...It looks to me that they are quite a bit faster than getting into Boston, when did that happen? Looks like in my AG it is 20 minutes faster than Boston, and that is a lot at 64!!!

Keeping in mind I have no idea how any of this worked......are they aware of the number of NYRR race time qualifiers and all the special qualifiers ahead of time? Maybe there were significantly more of these so there were fewer non NYRR time qualifying spots available? Their site said last year was the first year the non NYRR qualifying spots filled. I assume the number of lottery slots stays pretty constant so that may be less than the normal 10% acceptance rate this year?

The New York Marathon qualifying times have always been much faster than Boston.

The time allowances for older people really make it catered to them for Boston. I was right under the 35-39 qualifying standard for Boston but didn’t make the cut. I went out and ran a half time that qualified me for NYC without having to alter my training too much and signed up for that instead. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the younger crowd did the same since there isn’t a huge difference in the BQ marathon time and the equivalent half qualifying time.

That might be why. I think I got in the lottery a while back through a link from Strava. It's in God's hands now, lol.

I qualified in 2010 with a time from the Frankfurt Marathon (Germany). Worked seamlessly.

Registered with my 2011 NYC result for 2012, so missed the second start. Good luck in making it to the start line this year. It is worth the experience!
