My lunchtime riding buddy, a very experienced rider, and I were nearing the turnaround point of our Tuesday/Thursday lunchtime 20-miler today. All of a sudden, his right shoe came apart, and reacting to that feeling, he unclipped his left foot somehow. He went off the road into a soft, muddy shoulder, through a water-filled ditch, up and over the embankment of a retention pond, and face first into the pond. Scary to watch but he came through okay. Needless to say, we got some looks on the way back with him covered head to toe in mud and slime.

Just tell folks you went trail riding on your cross bikes. The average person wouldn't know the difference.
Better to fall in the mud than on the asphalt. :)
