Here's our setup. Basically, we started with a NEC VT650 mounted on the ceiling and projecting length-wise down the room. That allowed 4 CompuTrainers side-by-side. The resultant image was 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall, completely filling the far wall. We retained this projector for football games and (now) allowing us to project course maps and profiles while riding course videos that are projected on the adjacent long wall (see below).
To expand to 5 CompuTrainers, we had to rotate 90 degrees. I installed two NEC VT670 projectors ($100 each on eBay) on the ceiling, taking a lot of measurements and angles so that the images would match and create one large image.
Here's the resultant view from the rider's perspective.
By making the computer background black, you can't tell where the windows overlap, creating a big screen feel. The image above is about 16 feet wide and 7 feet tall, and is about 6 feet in front of the riders. The rider's head(s) don't impede the image or create a shadow unless they sit bolt upright (and we have several 6'5" riders) because the projectors are mounted pretty tight against the ceiling and throw the image over the top of the riders (we measured a LOT). The "seam" where the images meet in the middle is almost invisible and needs a little tweaking, but it's darn close. Notice we're running PerfPRO Studio and a Sufferfest video in the image above. Drew at PerfPRO is really supportive and has been most helpful in making this possible, not to mention that his software is awesome.
One interesting thing we discovered when riding Real Course Videos is the ability to project the course map and profile on the right-hand wall (the original projector throwing the image length-wise down the room, as seen in the picture above with the St. Croix 70.3 map displayed), while the Real Course Video plays in front of the riders. That way, riders can lift their finger into the image and point out where we "are" on the map in relation to the Real Course Video. That really help get the whole course and layout into your head....
We run two sessions each Tuesday and Thursday, and one session on Saturday and Sunday morning. We use SignupGenius (free) for online signup (
http://www.signupgenius.com/...AB29A64-computrainer) which allows me to be downstairs and ride and not answer the phone or text (any slots open?). No charge to anyone because Bev and I get the benefit of friends encouraging us to ride and train hard and we all get better.
