I was just thinking about this yesterday. I was thinking that I'm going to look pretty funny riding to the store on my "new" beater bike (it's ugly and about 20 years old, but safe to park outside, unlike my tri bike) and wearing my (only) helmet (rudy project)! Suffice it to say that the bike and the helmet don't match (and probably in violation of Za Gopha's manifesto) but it would be even stupider to go buy an ugly helmet just to match my beater bike!

I wish I could pick up these Spaceballs references. I've been far too busy combing the desert to find time to watch movies.

My point was that the guy i saw was wearng a fairing not a helmet, there was no< protection and this was no athlete.
If you want to look stupid go ahead, it could lighten up someones day, i have no problem with that. I am also aware that the normal population thing i look pretty stupid in cycling/tri gear anyway. 90% of poepl wouldn't differenciate between us.
Can't race for toffee

"Do you laugh at people who wear pointy aero helmets?"
In the TdF, no. In a sprint tri, yes. (My apologies to Mike Plumb.)

Only if they have aero heads.

You could probably hit ludicrous speed in one of those.
I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

this year at a crit (cat 4) i go to sign in and there is a guy wearing a WRESTLING singlet! and a lady is pinning his number on....he is really hairy and really skinny. he is wearing tri shoes and has a cannondale with rocket launchers.(i thought to myself this is why all the roadies think tri- geeks are so lame) so we line up and there he is wearing a LG aero helmet in a crit! he kept going off the front and then would get caught 100yds later.....he did this for the first 15-20 min and then faded hard. so freakin funny.

Funny story,
While working at a bike shop in Boulder, I was asked to ride in a series of commercials ranging form news ads to political promotions. One of the ads was a bit for a woman running for some office, cant remember what. A group of us met at Wash Park for the shoot. The woman had a "dressing room" next to the road that we would ride on. We stood around sipping tea waiting for her to get "outfitted" for about 30 minutes. when she came out of the dressing room we were stunned. They had put her helmet on backwards. her hair was perfectly styled around it. She was boping around shaking hands for 5 minutes before one of us had the nerve to tell her. Took another 20 minutes to get the helmet on straight and re-do her hair. We should have just filmed the spot and let it be. That was some funny shit.
Not so funny was the next shoot we did where a helicopter came swooping over us as we raced down a steep hill. I thought that thing was going to take our heads off. The wind alone almost caused a few crashes.

Last guy I saw wearing one was Eric Fernando at the Stony Creek Olympic Tri. The bike was on a 10km loop, and when I saw him, he was lapping me. Of course, he was doing it for fun two weeks after IMC while I was setting a lifetime PR for average speed on a bike leg. So, no, I did not laugh.

If you want to laugh at a pointy helmet story, here is one for you.
I bought a LG helmet off a friend for $50. Figured I couldn't go wrong. Except that you can't really wear sunglasses with it because, a) the ear covers are in the way and b) your sweat drops down right on the lenses. So I ordered a visor for 18 bucks and realized there are visor helmets with little places to screw them on and non-visor helmets without. Mine was a non-.
Not to be deterred, I took my handy screwdriver out and screwed them into the side of the helmet. Which was fine, EXCEPT that I didn't center it very well and so the nosepiece does not actually line up with my nose. From straight on it looks goofy as heck, but it was quite effective at big Kahuna. Luckily I suck at swimming, so the only people that pass me with my hand-me-down helmet and hand-me-down Zipp 909s are the really studly 35-45 year olds.

Will you be at the Sentinel?
According to Cobb taping the over the holes on your regular helmet tests about the same as a pointed aero helmet.
So the questions is - since the performance is the same, which one of these looks the dorkiest at your local area tri?
