Kentucky Cold-water swimming

This is a great interview with local Louisville swimmer John Fischbach, front page on the main site:

I have gotten in and swam with John in the Mighty Ohio during late spring and summer, but I'm not brave enough to get in after late September or before mid-May. In 2019, I participated in the Inaugural Labor Day "Bridge to Bridge" swim: the Lewis and Clark (East End) I-265 Bridge down to the JFK Bridge (I-65 S) and then slightly back upstream to the IM Louisville swim start. 9 miles, downstream in a really light current, probably less than .4mph, supported with kayakers. During the Spring and Summer, we meet on Sunday, Wednesday, and other mornings to swim parts of the IM course. In 2019, we also swam upstream of the L&C Bridge, starting in KY, swimming upstream to the IN side, then back down past Embry/12 Mile Island, stopping to take a picture at the farthest downstream part of the island, then back up to our starting point.

It's a fun group of people. The name of the group is the Louisville River Rats, an official USMS training group. For routine Sunday swims, we have a variety of groups that include people just swimming in the semi-protected channel on the KY side of Towhead Island, and others tracing the IM course in a swim called "the Crab Shack."

John is a very cool and mellow guy. Might hopefully bump into him in April.
