My weekend was productive. The 11km King Wolf Swim got shortened to ~7km (we don't know exactly as it seem one of the buoys blew off course). Water was really quit wavey (not whitecap), and with a threat of lightening the organizers chose a harbourfront multi loop course rather than the lake crossing. Less Epic, but we got a good swim in. I ended up in 1:54 and 3rd in 50-59. I drove 2 hrs back to Ottawa and after dinner decided to get up at 4:30 am the next morning to drive 2 hrs back to the Kingston area for the Sydenham Olympic tri for my first real tri in 4 years since IM Lake Tahoe 2015.
Water was whitecap and very wavey on the three loop course. I chose to wear an old sleeveless suit so as to not overheat (the day before I wore my long sleeve), and this was a tactical error as I am around 10+ lbs heavier around the upper body and neck and I could barely breath in the wetsuit. My swim time was 25:50 which was nearly 2.5 min slower than at swimming nationals with the floaty wetsuit. Some of it was a 7000m race the day before, but its only part of it. I had a panic attack and had to regroup and breast stroke early in the swim (you know how bad my breast stroke is). On the bike I was hammering like I have 6000km in my legs but I barely have 800km on the road so I quickly realized I was overcooking it. The bike was reasonably hilly with 360m of climbing total for 40 km.....and it was super windy (thus the whitecaps on part of the swim). It was also my first time using race wheel since IM Tahoe 2015 (literally took them out of the bike case where they were gathering dust). So it took me 20km to get used to being slapped around in Kona like wind gusts with traffic on the open road. First loop was 36.xx. Second loop I picked up the pace and did 33.xx. I was thinking sub 1:10 was in the cards, but I was just too slow in the first half. I was really happy with the bike on that course.
Then onto the run, I knew I would pay. I only started jogging before Ontario provincials in March and have not been running more than 25 km per week. In the back of my mind I was just resigning myself to jog a 60 min 10km which is mainly my pace in training then I saw a few sub 5 min K's around 3 km and then suddenly I was thinking, "screw it, I think I can break 50 min". I ran 49.xx. Sportstats shows 51 but that includes T2.
I actually won my age group, and beat one of our local 50-54 Masters Swim studs Steve Ingo on account of my "studly" bike split (at least for this race).
I WON MY AGE GROUP IN MY FIRST TRI IN 4 YEARS!
OK OK....I know its a local race, but as Monty said, once the timing chip goes on you go as hard as you can with whatever you have like you're racing the world championships. My final time was 2:31 on a really tough course with massive transitions. I think I can take this sub 2:20 on a flat course where I actually breath during the swim.
Maybe I should come out and race with you guys in Summerside. The utility there is actually one of my customers for our startup:
