Pool was closed for Canada Day.

I went camping over the weekend with the family. I did manage to swim in the lake, it was ahem - refreshing, especially after I dove about 8 feet down and hit the thermocline. So cold!! Didn't swim much, maybe a couple hundred metres. I was mostly helping a friend set a mooring for her new boat (18' Boston Whaler, and it can move....)

On Canada day I had a nice 7km lake swim. Did 2.5km with a group and then went out after for a larger 4.5km loop for the 2 hrs swim. It's also our 25th anniversary weekend celebration, so doing a long workout as part of it was just part of how our family works for the last 25 years LOL (in other words, no one wants to see me until I get a solid workout out of my system)!

Nice incoming tide and calm water behind the house today. 2hrs on the bike and a relaxing 1600m swim after. First race of the year coming up on 7/13 and I'm feeling pretty good.

Portland Bridge Swim. 1st in my age group which makes me USMS Long Course National Champion. It was cold. I’m used to 68°, but not for 5 hours. Spent time in an ambulance warming up.
GF, Heidi, elected to go with wetsuit and was 1st OA, besting wetsuited dude’s, as well. She beat me by nearly a half-hour.

My weekend was productive. The 11km King Wolf Swim got shortened to ~7km (we don't know exactly as it seem one of the buoys blew off course). Water was really quit wavey (not whitecap), and with a threat of lightening the organizers chose a harbourfront multi loop course rather than the lake crossing. Less Epic, but we got a good swim in. I ended up in 1:54 and 3rd in 50-59. I drove 2 hrs back to Ottawa and after dinner decided to get up at 4:30 am the next morning to drive 2 hrs back to the Kingston area for the Sydenham Olympic tri for my first real tri in 4 years since IM Lake Tahoe 2015.

Water was whitecap and very wavey on the three loop course. I chose to wear an old sleeveless suit so as to not overheat (the day before I wore my long sleeve), and this was a tactical error as I am around 10+ lbs heavier around the upper body and neck and I could barely breath in the wetsuit. My swim time was 25:50 which was nearly 2.5 min slower than at swimming nationals with the floaty wetsuit. Some of it was a 7000m race the day before, but its only part of it. I had a panic attack and had to regroup and breast stroke early in the swim (you know how bad my breast stroke is). On the bike I was hammering like I have 6000km in my legs but I barely have 800km on the road so I quickly realized I was overcooking it. The bike was reasonably hilly with 360m of climbing total for 40 km.....and it was super windy (thus the whitecaps on part of the swim). It was also my first time using race wheel since IM Tahoe 2015 (literally took them out of the bike case where they were gathering dust). So it took me 20km to get used to being slapped around in Kona like wind gusts with traffic on the open road. First loop was 36.xx. Second loop I picked up the pace and did 33.xx. I was thinking sub 1:10 was in the cards, but I was just too slow in the first half. I was really happy with the bike on that course.

Then onto the run, I knew I would pay. I only started jogging before Ontario provincials in March and have not been running more than 25 km per week. In the back of my mind I was just resigning myself to jog a 60 min 10km which is mainly my pace in training then I saw a few sub 5 min K's around 3 km and then suddenly I was thinking, "screw it, I think I can break 50 min". I ran 49.xx. Sportstats shows 51 but that includes T2.

I actually won my age group, and beat one of our local 50-54 Masters Swim studs Steve Ingo on account of my "studly" bike split (at least for this race).

I WON MY AGE GROUP IN MY FIRST TRI IN 4 YEARS!

OK OK....I know its a local race, but as Monty said, once the timing chip goes on you go as hard as you can with whatever you have like you're racing the world championships. My final time was 2:31 on a really tough course with massive transitions. I think I can take this sub 2:20 on a flat course where I actually breath during the swim.

Maybe I should come out and race with you guys in Summerside. The utility there is actually one of my customers for our startup:

Well done! Now you have me thinking that I need to try and (carefully) add running back in. My knee has been feeling pretty good lately, and I've been able to do breaststroke kick in practice without hurting it. Probably start at a mile or less, and slow....

Can you use the rowing machine? If so you end up doing a lot of deep squats from only a partially loaded start but to nearly full extension unlike running which is fully loaded. Also I find the rowing machine is a good compliment for shoulder stability given all my swimming!

There's one at the gym that I go to, but when I'm there over my lunch break I just have time to get weights in. Right now I'm trying to keep weights to 20 mins, so I'm not even doing core first. Get in, lift, and get out...

Ahh yeah... kids! Done that!
I got a lot of FB accolades and decided to follow up with a postmortem (almost appropriate):

Thank you all for the accolades. It was my hardest swim to date. 2 years ago, I felt fresh exiting the water. This year, I had to be helped and escorted right to the ambulance.
A few things attributed to that: I caught a rather nasty cold before the swim & I’m miserable now; The water was 68°. I have spent over an hour at that temp in the ocean. 5+ hours got the best of me; 5+ hours because of being sick and there was virtually no current. In fact, some people are sure the current reversed for awhile. The river is affected by tides. I was 45 minutes slower than 2 years ago. The last few miles, I couldn’t freestyle for hardly a minute at a time, switching to back and breaststroke.
Nevertheless, if you like distance swimming, this should be in your bucket list. The views are amazing and you don’t get a salt swollen tongue! 😛
