In the tracker app, looking at the placing numbers on the left, sometimes there is either an up or down arrow under it, and sometimes there is a number next to the arrow. What do these mean?

I'm pretty sure it's how there position has changed since the last checkpoint. So if in 7th place with a down 2, that would mean they were in 5th place at the last checkpoint. At least, that's how I understand it.
