Int'l travel with my dog
Quote | Reply
Hello,

I was going to research this, but I know that the folks here have all knowledge about all issues, so here goes:

I will be going back to Brazil for 30-50 days for some training and racing ( IM BRA). I am considering bringing my dog ( miniature dachsund, 13 lbs.) with me.

What are the rules doing this? I know Tyler took his dog to Spain and back all the time, so it can't be that hard. What paperwork would be needed? Would I run a risk of him not being allowed back in the country after the saty in So. Am?

Thanks in advance.

It's a country by country thing so check into it carefully. Call the Brazil embassy or consulate and get the info. You don't want your dog confiscated at airport arrival. At best your dog will have to have proof of up to date vacinations.

For example, England used to have a 6 months quarantee. It was claimed to keep rabies out of the country which was a scam since the disease always showed up within six weeks and that was even before modern lab tests. Totally bizzare British law but they kept it for many years. I don't know if they've upgraded but sure hope so.

Check into it carefully before booking passage.

Both the country you are traveling to and then returning to will have very specific and complex laws pertaining to domestic animals. Contact the aduanis/customs agents with a very specific request with full details of all your intended travel plans and get a written confirmation of what is required. You can pay people to do it for you but it is very expensive.

As a captain of a yacht I am not allowed to transport domestic animals from any Sth American countries into the EU/UK. Like all laws there are ways around this and exceptions, especially for the wealthy but they are very costly and time consuming.

UK to NA and back you can now have your dog / favorite pet chipped with info about vacinations and things. I saw an article on this about a guy travelling across the states, took his dog and circumvented the 6 mo quarantine stay on his return...............look in to it.

I once thought of taking my dog in a plane and got some info about it. So here how it works around here;

The dog has to have all vacines taken, gotta be over 4 months old and goes on a box with a tranquilize (sp?) up his ***. :-)
