I just built a 2008 Trek Madone...
They came in this morning!

Couple of interesting points...

1. Only rear brake is internal, not all cables like was supposed here a few days ago.
2. Madone 5.2 has new Ultegra SL components... look very nice, shift the same.
3. New stems. Very Ritchey-esque.
4. Redesigned Bontrager hubs. Lots of milling to shed excess weight.
5. Frame tubes are ginormous!!
6. NO replacable der. hanger... not sure I like that! I'm sure frame can be sent to Trek to replace if needed.
7. Integrated BB is very cool!
8. Seatmast/post works great... easy to set and adjust.

Pics and ride info to follow... too busy at work to do it now.

Ciao

5. Frame tubes are ginormous!!

I was reading about that bottom bracket design and wondered about this. I thought the frame was supposed to be more aero, but having a massive, wide down tube sure wouldn't seem consistent with that.

Aren't Cannondale and the other manufacturers going away from the large tubes? I thought I read that somewhere.

What's the story on pricing?

I believe Cannondale's new all carbon road bike, the SuperSix has the same oversized downtube as the current SystemSix.

And I would say the downtube on the R3 is anything but aero.

So, you're telling me that if I somehow bend my RD hanger (A VERY common occurrence) I need to send the bike/frame back to Trek. That alone would negate me buying one. Seriously, that's absurd.

Pretty bike, and the prices are competitive but what is the deal with Ultegra SL... isn't that what I used to call Dura-Ace?

I just rode this bike... WOW!

Puts anything else Trek to shame. Most other bikes as well, and I have ridden just about everything out there. Super quick and responsive. Feels pounds lighter than it is. More details to follow.

Ultegra SL is like Ultegra 6600... just a different finish and some additional milling to reduce weight. Dura-Ace is still Dura-Ace

Bent hangers can be straightened... broken ones get sent to Trek.

Glad you like the bike. The new Ultegra SL is just 100 grams lighter with a new finish. Most of that weight comes off in the levers with some additional aluminum. The bikes ride awesome. Much stiffer than the previous madone. I have been on one for several months with no complaints. Very stiff headtube and bb. Did you install the rear brake noodle?

The new 5.2 should be 1.2 lbs lighter than last years, with just about 1lb coming from the frame..

Built 1st w/o noodle, will build 2nd w/ noodle just to see what the difference is.

Stock 5.2 Performance came to 15.89 on my Ultimate scale.

Super stiff... lot's of fun to ride. Can't wait to get more time in the saddle.

Depends on how bent - either way it would be weakened. A non-replaceable der. hanger became the excuse for not buying Scott CR1's a year ago. I see this as a big mistake. Bent & broken hangers are all too common, and you shouldn't be forced to be without your bike for what is otherwise an easy fix.

The trek derailleur hangers are pretty strong.

We added the noodle to help the cable routing for the rear brake. Some riders did not like the cable sticking out slightly to the side. The noodle helps keep the cable tucked up to the frame. I have not had any issues with the cable rubbing my leg without the noodle. That bike weight is right around what I have as well.
