IM Triathlon - Might as well play polo
Thanks to all of you who shelled out nearly $1K for one, yes one, did I mention one, race today. In 2 years there will be no Mdot races under $700. Sport of the well-off is now officially sport of the rich. This whole thing is sickening, but you guys keep feeding it. Kona "World Championships"? Hardly...

Esprit Ironman distance race in Montreal is $345! That is half of IMMT....the distance is not owned by WTC!

You got plenty of other options if you don't like it.

Unfortunately the draw of doing Kona (have done it, love and sadly want to go back every year until I am 90) means that some have no choice but to play WTCs game.

If I could turn off my emotional need for lava and fierce competition (among a few thousand other things), I would go and do a Challenge race or Rev3 full or Embrunman.... There are so many great races out there, it is silly to do a WTC event unless you really are targeting Kona.

Do they give t-shirts and medals for playing polo? Does Cervelo make horses now? Will my Desoto shorts work well on the saddle? Can I get tattoo?
I have some Ralph Lauren shirts - so I already look like a polo player. I wonder if he makes a sticker for my car.

To:... ...You bratty poor sports who whine about pony'n up the cash for Ironman Series racing crack me up.

Do you confront people who drive a porsche; thanking them for making volkswagons too expensive too?

Good point. I no longer do wtc events for other reasons. Funny people complain about the wtc entry, but have no problem staying a 5 night minimum for a room that normalyy charges $70, but is 150 for the event. Pay for travel. Buy a bike case pay $2000 for race wheels but think entry is $200-$300 to high. In the grand scheme of triathlon IM that couple of hundred is nothing.

Well, spineless anonymity is no way to go through life. At least I stand behind my comments with my name.

And my yawn is to yet ANOTHER complainer on a dead horse topic. As a fan of the forum, you are a bandwidth thief, bring nothing new to the conversation... just another thread that stole six seconds of my life.

I get it, after hours on the Internet you didn't get in. ;-).... but there are indeed more than five other events out there. NYC is an expensive city, and I'm sure every level of bureaucracy has its hand out looking for its cut to run the race through its borough. So yes, it's gonna be expensive. Deal. Tons of events around the world. Don't like it? Don't do it.

But for the love of God, don't cry here. It's already been done on other threads. Try again with something mildly interesting.... it's the least you can do.

And the score stands, STJay 2, Green Barf -1 (I would have said zero except the stupidity of the name deserves a penalty).

So you're saying that the NY IM entry fee of $900+ (let's round up to 1000 after fees) is NOT setting a new precedent?

I race here and there, but with the average age of an IM athlete being only one decimal point away from the average entry fee...my age category (late 20s) is pretty empty. *shrug*

Agree, don't like it, don't do it.

Awesome.

Because driving the Land Rover with the horse trailer wouldn't be pretentious enough. ;-)

Barfie - there are LOTS of activities that are "too expensive" for the average Joe (or, even the above average Joe) to do.
I'll never:
climb Mt. Everest. Or likely any high-alititude mountaineering endeavor, in spite of the fact I'd probably be really good at it.
heli-ski in Alaska or the Bugaboos for a week
vacation in Tahiti or the French Riviera
"not have sex" in the Champagne Room

The list of shit I *can't* afford is nearly endless...
but I can still afford an IM, even NYC, if that race wasn't going to suck donkey dick.
(IMHO, YMMV). The entry fee is close to irrelevant in terms of the overall cost of doing an event.

GreenBarf-

What do you do for a living? Would you please do it for less than you are making now. So someone who doesn't have as much money can afford your services/products? Not everyone is able to afford everything. I really really really want to go on a safari. But dammit, it just costs too much to get to Africa. I guess safari's are evil because I can't afford it.

I also want to live in a house on the beach. And have a maid. Those people who build those houses on the beach are evil. I should be able to afford it. And the people who are maid's are evil. Because if they did it for free I could have one of them clean my house. But they are only out to make money.

Capitalism at its finest. As long as there are people willing to pay, then WTC will continue to up the price little by little until there is a plateau. It really is simple economics (supply and demand). When the demand goes down, the price drops as well. What is surprising is how the price is going up even in our economic times, but that is a discussion for the Lav room.

On the other hand, even if I got a "way down" roll down slot to Kona, there is an 85% chance i wouldnt take it due to the OVERALL cost of getting there with my family (there is no way I wont take those that suffered through my part time job of training). Would I love to go? Yes, but is there something else I can do with that money? Yes, like buy a mini-van, go to Disney (now that would be an awesome IM race), etc. My wife doesnt always want our vacations to be revolved around a race, and I am sure I am not the only one out there with a wife like that.

Polo is more expensive, and the saddle on those horses are too high.

Thanks to Green Barf who single-handedly drove up the price of sand by storing it all in his vagina.

A quick little check on Expedia for hotel rooms in New York city for this August -
7 Hotels in the "area" for less than $74 per night (Wouldn't catch me staying there)
67 Hotels between $75 and $124
146 Hotels between $125 and $199
157 Hotels between $200 and $300
50 hotels that are $300+ per night

Hotels in Tempe, AZ in November (when the IM is there)
10 less than $75
14 between $75 and $124
11 between $125 and $199
1 between $200 and $300
0 that are $300+ per night

If NYC is too expensive, save the $300 on race fees and enter IMAZ. You can use the $300 you saved to cover your entire hotel stay. Or do Vineman Full this year. It is still open. Or B2B, etc.
You can still tell your friends you are in Ironman (I think everyone here will understand).

Maybe you should check out Rev3 Cedar Point.

P.S.-Charlie, if this guy signs up, I deserve a 10% finders fee.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.
