How do I de-stankify my running shoes?
So I've got a pair of running shoes that have plenty of miles left in them, but they smell AWFUL. How do you guys clean/make your shoes not smell terrible? Thanks.

Throw them in the washing machine without the laces, set to "delicates". Sometimes I'll hand wash them in the shower with me.

But, are you rotating shoes? Stinky shoes are almost always because they are not getting enough time to dry out and bacteria is growing. Most runners have at least 2 pair to rotate through, to allow the shoes to recover and dry out.

How old is this pair?

I've never understood the aversion to soap and water. Why are people so reluctant to wash their running and cycling shoes?

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I have a pair of stuffits that I throw in after every run, but a cheaper solution is newspaper. Stuff newspaper in your shoes after every run and it should help out quite a bit. However, if your shoes are too far gone right now, pull the shoe laces out and throw them in the washing machine then air dry them.

I've washed mine in washing machine...let them dry and then sprinkled them with baking soda inside and out...works great.

Because in the old days (like 10 years ago) the shoes would break down when exposed to harsh detergents and high heat (according to the the Nike tag that used to be in the Air Max).

I have no idea if it hold true today, because I wear Mizuno and they don't have the warning (or if it ever was a concern).

Regardless, it is easy enough to wear them into the shower, take them off and rinse them out, rinse off the liner, and then put everything upside down on the back porch (or front step or kitchen hot air vent, etc) about once a week.

Besides, they are on your feet. Who cares? Let them set in the garage when you aren't wearing them.

how timely, I wore my old pair of running shoes to work today and I could smell them while I sat at my desk. They are definitely going in the wash tonight.

Wash, Dry, stick in the freezer after they're dry to kill any remaining bacteria.

My wife said to place them in a garbage bag, walk outside, lift the lid to the garbage can, throw them in, close the lid and no more stink!!!

Seriously......a mild bleach solution and wipe the inside and outside.......done. Don't use too much. A tad will do. This is called sanatizing.....we have to use bleach ALOT in this industry. Most people use WAY TOO much bleach and it gets a bad rap for ruining stuff....but if you read the directions you'll be fine and it works like a charm!
