Hot spots in shoes? Specifically carbon super shoes
Quote | Reply
I’ve raced in the vapor flys for a while, but I am looking for a race shoe that runs a bit stiffer. I’ve tried the ASICS metaspeed sky and the adidas adios pro, both of which lead to incredibly uncomfortable hot sports on the bottoms on my feet about a mile into hard, race-like efforts. The hot spots develop regardless of whether I wear socks. However, the Nike VF’s never did this to me…

And tricks to fix hot spots? Or am I stuck with the Nike’s?

You got stuck with Nike’s. My gf has exact same problem and she’s ok with only Next%. She tried different soles and whatnot but didn’t work. Short distance is ok with other shoes but when it comes to long distance. Let’s say anything longer than 4 miles, only Next% is working for her.

Any word on what causes hot spots? Is it just friction?

Interesting. I get hotspots but it only happens in races. Never in training with the same shoes. This is both in next% and alphafly's (both first version).

Maybe the shoes just don't fit your foot very well, there are plenty of shoes I can't wear. You could try something like blister shield (powder) or body glide? quality socks maybe?

Same here, different shoes but same hot spot. Between little toe and the next one in. Massive blisters everytime.

Why don’t you just put in a slim gel insole like a sofsole etc

I have the exact same problem with VP, Adidas Pro2, Metaspeed Sky + and even recently HOKA Carbon X3, but it's always on the same and it has nothing to do with the socks. According to my podiatrist, it is simply an instability (only 1 foot) and since the heel of all these shoes is not rigid, the foot is not controlled and the tip of the foot moves with each impact. According to him, the only solution is proprioception in order to be able to correct this instability. Manufacturers always try to save a few grams, but in this place it's not a good idea for us.

I am having the same issue but for me I was fine with ASICs Novablast 1, tried Novablast 2 and having terrible burning sensation on my feet and need to stop several times during a run. More recently I went from Vaporfly 1 (which I had no issues with) to Vaporfly 2, again burning sensation on my feet which is appears to be best described as hot spots. What is going on and is there anything I can do? Will I get used to it if I use it on shorter runs once in a while, other suggestions?

This is a problem that pre-dates Carbon plated shoes, and relates to the fit of a shoe to the anatomy of a given person's feet. Hot spots typically happen because a shoe is touching the foot somewhere that it shouldn't, or not touching the foot somewhere that it should. It's not that there's something wrong, or better about one pair of shoes to another, but it's that some shoes are better or worse fits for your feet, which on top of other ailments (chaffing, numbness, etc.) can manifest itself as hotspots. Depending on the particular spot and issue, there are some hacks that sometimes can relieve certain hotspots, but may be of little assitance elsewhere. The first and obvious culprit is how tightly the shoe is laced. I tend to get most hot spots when a shoe is too tight in the forefoot area (I have a particularly wide foot, that gets wide at the base of the 5th metatarsal, so extra tension/compression there is often the culprit for me. In some cases it's cause by the shoe's last or the materials, and there's no way around it, but the first thing I will try is to lace the shoe looser in the lower parts and tighter in the upper eyelets of the shoe to secure my foot, without over tensioning that area (often using the heel lock lacing technique at the top too). The other alternate solution could be the use of elastic laces which may relieve some of this (but could also be the culprit in some other cases of hotspots). Ideally you would figure this out and if you can mitigate it prior to buying, but if you already have the shoes, you can play around with these mitigations and see if they may help, If not, they may be destined for the donation bin...

For me I don't get hotspots with Nike shoes, because my feet don't even fit inside of them (their lasts are too narrow). I have had good success with the Metaspeed Sky/+ shoes, but my foot is obviously different from those who have success with the Nikes...

I tried gel insoles before because even my doctor recommended them for my feet but after a while they hurt too and also they moved a little bit inside the shoe which is a strange feeling.
Therefore I try to avoid gel insoles for long running. (For a short walk they are fine)

To be honest now I prefer the online sweepstakes casinos that are listed on https://www.sweepstakescasino.com.
