I hope he DOES learn to swim, at least passably....

And he used to be a sub-4 miler, it doesn't sound like he can still do that. Although he's likely not that far off...

I think he would have to up his TT game significantly, in addition to swimming, to be any threat in tri. He's a great climber, but that's not much use in most triathlons.

Shitty TT ability for a WT pro, with Grand Tour legs, is still better than 99.999% triathlete field ability (excepting other WT pros like Vino, and Wurf).

no sponsors | no races | nothing to see here

While Woods is a much better runner, WT legs haven't done much for Talansky. Talansky had some high finishes in TTs in big races. Vino, too, had some high finishes in TTs. Woods has never been close to top 20. That said, Wurf never had any good TTs while a cyclist, so maybe you're right. Wurf is 3 or so inches taller and more than 15 pounds heavier than Woods, so that makes a difference too.

Victor Campanaerts and Richie Porte were both very good triathletes as well. Both still swim. Victor was at Kona last year with friends to spectate. I think both will give a crack at Ironman at some point.

Love Mike Woods. Would like to see him here too some day.

Woods isn't quite a puncheur but he definitely does better at short hard climbs.
Producing steady power for 180km is a much different effort.

Most milers I've seen that have trained for the distance are usually pretty quick in the marathon... but once again, not quite specific to their talents.

i do believe craig mottram jumped into some duathlons once . . . surely he's the only multisport athlete ever who can say he's done this:

.
Craig was the Australian Junior Triathlon Champion in 1993 before he moved to running. In 2004 he raced the Noosa Triathlon in 1:53:40 winning the Open category by a couple of minutes. He wasn't allowed to race in the Pro race because he didn't have a Pro license.

You know I realized, this guy should learn to swim.

He would make things interesting especially at a race like Lanzarote.

Woods is from my town....it was some of my tri geek buddies who ran at the same track club who took him out to ride when he was an injured runner. You guys know the rest. I don't think he has any interest in swimming. When he has done his biking career, almost certain that he'll get back into "age group" running just for fitness. I'd love it if he did get into tris. He knows plenty of local tri guys who can get him rolling.

i think it's always important to drop a guy like mottram into the discussion to keep everyone grounded, especially when the old-timers start talking about how "brownlee's 10 000m PB is nothing, kenny souza once ran a 25-minute 10k, and i saw mark allen do 2x5000m in 12:00, off the bike, at altitude!" etc etc.

Did you see this guy on the stage today? He stayed up there with the big guys all the way to the end.

He could backstroke at St George 140.6 and win by a mile or two. Amazing given his relatively short time cycling.

He did used to coach a few local AG triathletes before moving to the world tour.

I heard a TdF commenter say "... future winner of the Ironman ... ya, he grew up a swimmer..."

Anyone recall who he was talking about?

At a different level I've seen it happen. In 2016 in Coeur d'Alene Olympic tri a guy ran 30:xx (4 minutes faster than second fastest run), and biked 58:xx (2,5 minutes faster than second fasted bike, some nice climbs in there). He swam a 1:05 though (second last out of the water).

Since he probably makes more money cycling, than 99%+ of pro triathletes, I don't think he'll have much motivation to learn to swim/ switch to triathlon. Based on his late entry to cycling, there's a good chance he'll be racing bikes until his late 30's.

I do enjoy seeing athletes transition from an elite level of one sport, to another, and have been a big fan of Woods. I'll be very interested to see how he progresses in the tour and if he tries to stick in the GC hunt.

Also rooting for Woodsy to stick around the GC top ten. Especially since Tejay is completely out of it, he's the backup in case something happens to Rigo. Both Rigo and Woodsy seem to be riding well.

I've seen Rusty run. He can still run plenty fast. He's a good guy to follow on IG.

Well he got some sort of record, sounds like it was quite painful to get the 2nd part of it;
