Hit by a deer
I was doing my last ride before AG Nats yesterday and two deer came out of nowhere. I had no idea they were near until one sprinted in front of me and the other decided to pull a hockey move and body check me from the side. Garmin has me going 26mph when Bambi launched me from the bike. When I came down I hit my head and shoulder/back at the same time. I was woozy but didn't lose consciousness. My shoulder is toast. When I stood up I found that the end of the clavicle, near the shoulder, was sticking up about an inch higher than it should. The ER docs diagnosed it as a complete separation/tear of the acromioclavicular ligament and the coracoacomial ligament. I was told that there are three ligaments that hold the clavicle down and that it is rare to tear 2 of them free. If it was one, then it sounds like PT but no surgery. If it was all three then surgery would be required. I can't get in for a consult with the surgeon until next week. While I was in the hospital and waiting for answers I started moving my arm and shoulder in various directions as much as I could without acute pain. By the time the visit was done, I had worked the clavicle back down so that it now sticks up about a centimeter at most. There are no broken bones.

Has anyone had a similar injury? How did it turn out? Any experience to share? Questions I should ask the surgeon?

Obviously, I can't race AG Nats this weekend, but I'm wondering if I also have to give up on a flat marathon in early September.

That sucks. I was on a ride once through some orchards in a deer launched out of them right at me once.
Missed me by about 5 feet. Scared the crap out of me...

I hope you heal up soon.

I can’t imagine running a marathon with it in a month. Maybe you’ll be able to but the repetitive impact is going to be really painful after awhile.

at IM CdA one year we were in a paceline at the start of the 2nd loop heading out of town and a deer jumped right across our path, practically right over the middle guy in the line. Amazing nobody was hit.

I hit a deer while descending a canyon and it wrecked me. I woke up in the ditch and had the same issues as you. Mine was not a dislocation but broke in 4 different spots, I was sent home with a brace and gave it two weeks and then saw the doc again and it was another 4 weeks and I was back to jogging, at 7 weeks out I was rock climbing, but mine was not tendons. Probably the biggest issue was I broke 6 of the spinous processes in the process, those were a pain in the back, but those were good after about 3 weeks and 5 weeks it was a non issue. Did you have any issues with those

I know that probably doesn't answer your question in full, but similar in some ways.

Thanks for the relatively quick recovery story. The injuries are different, but you've given me some hope. The worst part isn't the pain. It's the uncomfortable feeling of bones rubbing together that aren't supposed to.

Damn brother, that sucks. Had it almost happen once to me in Wisconsin. In SoCal I just have to dodge hookers and blow.

Though 3 years ago I did get hit by a car and separated my right shoulder. Same as you, level 1 for what it sounds like. Though there was no way I could move my arm shoulder any time after. I had a sling for a week. I was on the trainer 2 days later and running as well. Well not running perse and not well...more of a shuffle. You don’t realize how much you use your upper body when you run. I could swim a week or so after...don’t crawl only...all other strokes wouldn’t work. I did physical therapy for a few months which saved me and my sept Ironman.

If surgery isn’t needed you’ll be able to do the marathon. I think eh mean time do indoor riding, pool running, treadmill walks, etc. don’t rush it obviously. I’d also watch Bambi and smile when his mother dies, then eat some venison.

I had a complete separation of my left shoulder 32 years ago in a motorcycle accident. I waited 6 months to have surgery. I thought maybe I could live with it, but the clavicle kept getting caught in stuff when I'd move my left arm. The surgeon cut off the end of the clavicle and inserted a piece of bone+ligament chipped from my shoulder. This attached the two somewhat and kept the clavicle from moving around too much and causing issues. I chose this somewhat janky option because it lasts forever, unlike the alternatives at that time.

Deer are a serious menace in some parts of the country. In the last 12 years here I've hit two with my car. Fortunately I haven't hit any on my bike, but have had some close calls. Lucky you didn't tangle with a buck with sharp horns!

No comment on rehab.. I have no experience....

but I was thinking this very morning of putting one of the deer whistle thingiemajigs on my bike somewhere.. I figure where I'm worried about them on fast descents I will easily be going fast enough to make the whistle work.

I had a similar shoulder injury about 3 years ago. AC joint separation and torn labrum.

I didn't end up having surgery and started swimming, running, and biking. I do experience pain on the run form time to time.

  • Bone still sticks up
  • Shoulder is strong from the swimming
  • I have had PTs and Sports Docs tell me that not having surgery was the best move I could have made...outcomes are pretty shitty for surgery in the range of motion department.

That sucks...broke my clavicle back in May...to be honest...you're not going to be able to rush out of this...it sucks...I'm cagey as a mofo. Surgery and now rehab...earliest race I'm looking at is a swim-run in October.

Had a level 3 AC separation a number of years ago from GS training too early in season(ski breaks thru snow, hits ground, idiot flys 15 meters with out stretched arms). Ortho recommended conservative treatment for a few weeks and then re-evaluate. Long story short, no surgery and zero problems today other than noticeable drop (or bump) in shoulder when arm held out to side parallel with ground. Getting in the pool as soon as I could, I believe, helped the most followed by comprehensive shoulder routine in gym with weights at around 12 weeks or so. Luckily today, you’ll probably get a PT to guide you through the recovery process. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Also, if you have problems sleeping the first few nights, I positioned my arm against my abdomen (sling style) and held it in place by wrapping an ACE bandage over it and around the back like a mummy.

While still sitting in the ER, my wife turned to me with a straight face and said, "Do you want me to go to the store and get some venison for dinner?" She's a keeper.

In the videos above, mine was closest to the second one although thankfully there was no rack because she didn't try to jump me. She put her head down, drove it into the side of my leg and then after getting her neck joint in the optimum spring position literally flung her head up and launched me. I saw the one that hit me when it was about 3-5 feet away and there was no time to change speed but just braced for impact instead.

Thanks for the help. It is nice to hear that there are at least 3 people with the same AC separation injury. The initial opinions from docs have pointed towards not having surgery but I have to say the thing that is driving me nuts is the feeling of bone rubbing against bone when I flex in different positions and it is interesting that the person out here that reported the same thing did go with surgery. For now I keep focusing on getting natural movement in various directions and I think that is helping a bunch. I've got PT scheduled for next week with a shoulder specialist who was previously helping me with a knee. He's going to be in for a surprise.

When I stop being tired 24x7 the treadmill on a steep incline at walking speed is going to be the first thing I try. I hope to be in the gym in a couple of days.

BTW, this is what the XRay looks like. I think the pic and being told 2 tendons are toast makes it a level 3, but no professionals have told me a designation yet.
