I though it was some sort of mortal sin to have your bikes on a roof rack or trunk rack "Exposed" to the elements. However it just struck me that all of the TDF team cars use roof racks. Certainly the "gods" of all things cycling should know better.

It's more about quick accessibility than protection from the elements. And since they get so many bikes every year...

I think that it has about several things:

1. Europeans tend to be more sensible and logical in their choice of vehicles that they drive.

2. They do have to carry a number of bikes.

3. The cars need to be manueverable to get into tight places in the team entourage and along the twisting turning roads that make up many of the tour stages. A Yukon SUV just would not cut it.
