Help. Brake Cable Through Top Tube
Is there a secret to feeding the rear brake cable through the top tube of a bike? Or is it just luck in finding the hole on the other side?

Thanks.

After doing this about twenty times lately here is what i do,i used a brass welding rod but any small stiff wire might work,i used the rod to find the other hole, you might have to bend the end a few times untill you get a shape that will find the cable hole then i use thin tape(packing tape worked for me)to tape the inner cable to this rod and carefully push cable while pulling the rod slowly,if everything goes well you have it.Good luck, let me know if need any futher help

The secret trick is to solder (or crazy glue) the end of the new cable to the end of the old one, and pull both through the TT with the old one, then cut them apart.

Oh yeah - you need to cut the ball off the old one first.

If the old cable is already out, have fun. You may find it easier to send a piece of wire through first, then the cable (soldered/glued as above.)

have gravity help. Orient the frame so that the cable falls toward the hole. If there are snap in housing guides, remove them. If the frame runs full housing, run the wire first. Put a little bend in the end of the cable about and inch from the end at about a 30 degree angle. Feed from the top down toward the hole, rotate the cable to start the bend toward the hole and push. I work on Felt's road and tri bikes that use internally routed cables, I can hit it pretty quick now that I've done 80 or 90 of them.

that is the way we do the wiring on our race cars. They have all the electronics run through the tube chassis, pretty slick, I just don't think it is needed if you vertically orient the cable's path and use gravity.

This would make a great leg of a Mechanic's Decathlon.

Thanks SuperDave, tried this and I got it about the 5th try. Thanks to all others as well.

And by the way, it is a Felt Road bike.

Glad to help. Which model do you have? Where did you get it? Another tip is to use "compressionless" brake housing for the rear brake. It will help with the soft lever feel caused by the added length of the housing.

Enjoy your bike!

It is a F4. I got it through my cycling team. We are sponsored by Felt and I could not resist. I have never built a bike up, so this has been a learning experience. Thanks again.
