HED 180 - 2nd at Gravel Worlds
Rider Chase Wark's bike has the HED 180 laced to a gravel rim and got 2nd at Gravel Worlds in Nebraska (not to be confused with the UCI Gravel Worlds in Italy later this year).

Gravel race bikes are really starting to look a lot like tri bikes these days. It's only a matter of time before we see full discs and TT helmets.

Here's a YouTube interview where Chase explains how this came about:

It looks like Chase has already tried a full disc in local gravel races:

Love to see it and makes perfect sense. The optimization problem for gravel is the same as any other bike race except the rolling resistance figure is much higher and more variable. My strategy would be to construct around rolling resistance first and then maximize aerodynamics from there. Maybe even wax/teflon on the deep section wheels in an attempt to reduce mud buildup.

I don't know of any research on this, but my intuition is that the larger, rougher tires somewhat but not fully negate the advantage of a deep section or disc by leaving a more turbulent wake from the leading edge.

That was accompanied by a skin suit and aero helmet at least once too.
