Front wheel for 2018/19 Trek Speed Concept -- 404 or 808?
Has anyone had a chance to compare Zipp FC 404 and 808 front wheels for crosswind stability/handling on new 2018/19 Trek SC with a disk rear wheel and full-foil 6:1 fork? Thanks!!

Just in case, the stats: SC frame size is medium, rider weight 120lb, elite racer, bike handling skills cat4 to cat3 (few TTs and cat3/4 crits per season), road bike is Felt AR3 with Campa Bora 50, average speed 23-24 mph.

Man, at that weight I might be tempted to go with the 404. Ive done the Aeolus 9 (scary), 808 (great), Hed Jet 6 I think (great), & 404 (no worries at all). I weigh at least 50 pounds more than you.

I’ve run an 808 (front and rear on a P2) and a Hed Jet 6 plus (front and rear on a Speed Concept). I feel a lot more stable on the Jet 6 depth which is equivalent to a 404. And I feel even better when I’ve got a disc on back. I’m 45-50 lbs heavier. In terms of bike handling skills I’ve raced 5-10 Cat 4 road races and a couple dozen CX races over the years.

With your weight I’d recommend the 404. Your not giving up much time to an 808. The less strain on your upper body compared to handling the deeper wheel will make you less tense when you get off to run. Plus it might only take a few times of sitting up to control your front wheel to negate the gains made over a shallow rim

I have been running a 808 front on that bike since 2014 but I weight 160lbs. Have both! Use the 404 for training or for windy race days and the 808 for those calm wind race days. Other suggestion would be look at a 858, I have this wheel now handles better then a 808 in the wind, downside is that it’s obviously not a cheap wheel.

I’d go 404. The Speed Concept fork isn’t that sensitive to wheels, so it’s down to the mix of handling and wheel self I’d go with the 404. Do try the 808 though and see how much of a handful it is. It will be a bit quicker but if it affects your riding then that negates some and potentially all of the benefit.

I rode an 808 front once. Once.

No clue how I did it. 404 seems sketchy enough for me when it takes on the wind from the side. Must have been a dead calm day when I rode that 808. Eventually I sold the wheel as it sat in my house for nearly 2 years not ridden.

Thank you, 808 at 130lb sounds unusual. What is you bike? Is your 808 firecrest model? Thanks!

Really? Is that unusual? I rode in some windy days, but had no problem. I just have to hold on to the aero bar tight.
My bike is P2 size 51 and it's a tubular wheel.

I'm 145-150lbs and have used 808 w disc on speed concept for a couple years.

However, I recently picked up a set of Bontrager xxx6's with my roady and swapped out the front from 808 to XXX6 for a couple recent flat with slight winds races.
Splits were positive in both races (16km & 90km).

I'm a good bike handler and never had an issue with lean in strong winds using 808.
With the XXX6, it was noticeable how reduced the wind affect was.
808 is just the firecrest model not nsw.

I'm now at a stage where I don't know why I'd swap out the XXX6 for the 808 as such little benefit it felt.

If buying now, I'd go the XXX6 with disc rear.
Or else an Enve 7.8 with disc.
Seem to be best to go for a 60-70mm front rather than full 80mm considering all options.

If you are considering either of these wheels than I would add the ENVE 7.8 front wheel to your list. The rumor mill has it as one of the fastest wheels out there, especially with a wider tire. Handling is probably better than the 808, though I find "handling" to be pretty subjective. Braking is very good for a carbon wheel.
