Seconding Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Just did it for the first time last year and its my new favorite for sure. Casual atmospher, with an awesome course.

Ditto on Santa Cruz Sentinel. First Oly back in 1994 and have done it almost every year since.
Second would be Sandman, in Aptos just down the road. Cool beach run. Love ocean swims.
Third IM California, 2001, last year of the full. Great weather and I really like to the course and atmosphere.

- Laguna Phuket, Thailand. Absolutely the best. Like going to triathlon heaven.
- Nice, France (old version). Friendly people, awesome course, beautiful place to visit.
- Ironman Canada. Even better than Hawaii. The last mile of the run is what it's about.
- Steelhead, Benton Harbor. Another race that typifies the sport. The best 1/2 IM. Period.
- Maumee Bay Triathlon, Maumee Bay, Toledo. The best kept secret in the triathlon world.

K-Town Tri, Kingston, Ontario. Because it's the first tri I ever did and do it every year since. It's also the longest running tri in Canada. I think this is their 27th year. Beautiful historic city in the Thousand Islands aera where the St. Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario. It's an independent tri, put on locally.

Castaway Club Triathlon, Pelican Lake, Minnesota. It's held at a beautiful camp than was once a sailing club. There was only about 130 entries last year too.

After over 500 races under my belt(size 33" now, gonna fit those skinny levis, or die trying) I would have to say that the best race is the one I have yet to do. They all have their charcter, and some are truly spectacular. But the ones I dream of doing, where I haven't been, are the best. It's what keeps me going. So I will say that the DeSoto triple next year is what occupies the best in my mind right now.....The stragedies, the stage racing, the beautiful courses, doesn't get any better than that.....

Granite Ledges....which is no more. Well, it's been reincarnated as Mooseman and is held in June, and this year there was the 1/4 iron and the 1/2 iron. I did the 1/2 iron, which is G.L. doubled with a bit added on the bike and run, and it amazed me how the nature of a course can change when it is doubled. Mooseman is a terrific event, but I loved the late September date of Granite Ledges -- as well as the name! The G.L./Mooseman course is quintessential New England and the run, which skirts the edges of Newfound Lake, is the prettiest tri run I've done. Great course, great organization, great race.

Yeah, and All I have to do is roll out of bed, drive over a couple of mountains and I'm at the start. It bookends the summer with the Escarpment Trail Run,
my other home town race.

TransRockies. Week long mountain bike stage race with a 2 person team format.
Guaranteed you spend more time running/hiking than you do in most tri's, so I would definitely put it in the multi-sport category...
