Here's my thought:
A fixed gear has no freewheel. As long as the rear wheel is turning, the cranks are turning. In other words, there is no coasting.
A single speed to me would be similar to a BMX bike. That is, a single rear cog with a freewheel.
I have a fixed gear and it's one of the most enjoyable ways to ride. If you are thinking about picking one up, go for it.
I proudly DO NOT post my workouts on Facebook!!!

I am definately not an expert in this area but...
With a single gear you have only one speed. However, you can still coast. With a fixed gear you can not stop pedalling unless the bike is stopped. If the bike is going really fast down hill, you must increase your cadence to keep up.
