4' mile is not world level anymore.
8'04'' for 2mi is around a 7'34'' for 3km which is
definitely world class stuff.

Gee, I was thinking 8'04'' that's freaking fast and definitely world class....
of course, as you gave exactly the new 2mi record set by haile gebreselassie... :-)
guess it was not coincidental ? :-)

I agree 4' is not world standard, it's more like a 2.10 marathon, good but not great but 8.04 for 2 indoors.............

While the 2 mile race distance is not run that often - outdoors or indoors, the 8:00 min 2 mile mark is possibly the next great barrier to fall in middle distance running.

Showing extraordinary range Haile Gebersilasse set the new indoor standard on the weekend. This is the same Great Geb who owns the World Record for 5000m on the track, World record/best 10K(track & Road) and has run 2:06 for the marathon. They are already calling him the greatest distance runnner of all time.

It will be interseting to see if Geb goes for the 8:00 barrier outdoors this summer. Awesome stuff.

Even more impressive is that Hicham El Gerrouj tried to break this new WR this week end in Lievin and missed by 2'' despite Gebre already focusing on the longer stuff.

IMHO Gebre is indeed the greatest distance runner of all times.

It should be an interesting season of track racing, particularly at 5000m. Hicham has said that he would move up to the 5000m this year. What a race that would be Geb and Hicham going at it over 5,000m. I suspect that they may avoid one another at the World Championships this summer in Paris with Hicham taking on the 5000m and Geb doing the 10,000m, but for the right amount of $$$$, we could might see a big show-down over 5,000m at one of the Gand-Prix meets some time this year.

As an aside, with another thread talking about speed/quality training - when to do it and how much. It is interesting to note that these athletes are essentially in top form year round. At any time of the year they are close to top form. The times they run - World records/bests or close to it would indicate this. Bottom line, once you work your way to your top level of fitness, it is better to focus on quality training year round.
