Drilling Top Tube For Cable Routing
Hi all,

Has anyone drilled into the top tube for cleaner cable routing? And if so, have you got any tips? Have a 2012 Cannondale Slice and want to try and remodel the shifter cables from the down tube to the top tube- if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.

I did it on my 2008 Cervelo P2C back in the day.
I used masking tape to prevent the drill bit from slipping or splintering the carbon. Also, taped the drill bit to make sure I don't drill deeper than necessary. Start with a really small drill bit and then go to the next size up and so on.

It’s also much easier if you go down the Di2 Route.

Reason being?
Aero gains would be marginal and I wouldnt want to risk frame damage just for the look.

There is always one isn’t there!
If Laurent Fignon had concealed cables he might have won the 89 tour.

If Fignon had concealed cables, don't you think Lemond would've had them, too? :)

I will rephrase that
”There are always two”
Happy now?

I have boutique brand frame and asked this very same thing directly to the engineer who designed it.

I said I didn't care about warranty

He asked me if I cared about breaking my body.

Drilling holes into a high stress area not designed for it may or may not cause catastrophic failure.

Opened this thread out of morbid curiosity, surprised you're the only one saying this! Was expecting a dozen replies of worst case scenarios.

His ponytail drag is what cost him. If he man bunned it, he might have won.

If memory serves me I believe Lemond had aerobars and an aero helmet and Fignon no helmet and just bullhorns?
A helmet would have saved him more that cables Im guessing not to mention clipons.

Fignon also had a front disc wheel, and a severely swollen nad, so swings and roundabouts...
He did have an "aero" "helmet" on other TT stages in that race.
