Re: Do You Wear Makeup in Races [kiki] [ In reply to ]

I've never worn make-up at a race. Just good sunscreen and maybe chapstick. I don't wear mascara or eyeliner on a daily basis, only for special occasions. I will agree with some of the ladies- it is fun to paint your nails for a race though! It's too bad there isn't a more chlorine resistant type of nail polish out there... mine only seem to last about 1 session in the pool before peeling off

No make up but I have a great tinted moisturizer with SPF 45 :)

Not for triathlons, I just can't see the point as it would all come off in the first 30 seconds - just a waste of product.
For run races I've been known to throw on some eye shadow and waterproof mascara but that's about it.

I have a pre-race photo from a 70.3 where my wave was entering the water. The lady next to me has on full blown (what looks like stage) makeup. I mean, to each their own, but honestly she looks like a circus clown in her wetsuit, swim cap and caked on layers complete with thick, bright red lipstick. Not flattering in the least :(

Get a gel color manicure. These last me 10-14 days, even with 3-4 4000-5000 yard swim workouts a week!

sounds like a good idea! If I wasn't your typical poor student trying to fly on a tight budget and make triathlon work- I would def. give it a go! Maybe as a special summer treat! For now I will stick with my cheap stuff :)

I wear waterproof mascara and long wearing very pale pink non sticky lip color. Race nails & toes are a must for an A race. Lots of sunscreen too.
While I wear make up daily it isn't heavy and it just gives me a more polished look that complements my super short hair.
Do what works for you and what makes you feel good!

Makeup, no, but I do try to get my eyelashes dyed. It super convenient and lasts about a month.

I always always always wear purple eyeshadow when I ski- started doing it when I was 19 and skiing with lots of boys. There was something about wanting to embrace my girlieness and a delusional idea that the eyeshadow had some magical quality that made me turn better. Now it's a habit (and I'm convinced that if I don't do it I'll blow out an ACL or something).

I'm not a girly-girl and I usually don't wear much more than eyeliner and lip gloss, but I do like the idea of decorating my body for special events (my coach refers to it as "war paint"). I think it gives a psychological boost and I'll take all the boosting I can get :-)

I didn't used to put anything on, but for the last few years I have perfected a 3-minute face that I do before every race. Most people probably wouldn't even notice any makeup on me as I'm fairly light-handed with it, but I personally feel better knowing that I have my "eyes on."

On race morning, my face receives the following:

sunscreen (physical based so that it doesn't run into my eyes and burn)
waterproof eyeliner (usually just the top lash line, sometimes the bottom)
mascara (I have some super waterproof stuff that I reserve just for races)
gel-based cheek stain (if I know there are going to be a lot of pre-race photos with friends; otherwise I skip it)
lip balm with SPF (if I remember to apply it)

Unlike most, I typically don't bother with nail polish. My hair is naturally curly and ends up looking like a hot mess no matter what I do to try to tame it. Usually I resort to two french braids.

When I was racing O'side yesterday, I stopped on the bike to use the restroom...I pulled out Kiss My Face lip balm - NO COLOR and some guy rode by and commented about my "lipstick", it was pretty funny. I thought to myself..."STer who reads the WF..." although I'm sure it was just pure coincidence!! It did give me a laugh.

My swim exit photos are unspeakable regardless :)

On a daily basis my makeup routine is swipe of eyeliner and I'm out the door, so I do that at races most of the time too. Nothing dramatic, and it stays put pretty well. It just helps me feel awake and ready for the day to put it on. I say do whatever makes you feel confident and race ready!

I'm also part of the "race nails" club. I started doing it back in middle school when I was a swimmer, and it stuck. Team colors for big races, and toes only (since fingernail polish never managed to stay on when swimming a lot). I had blue and green toes this past weekend :)

For whoever asked about hair, I usually go with a braided low ponytail these days. I put it as high as it can go without interfering with my helmet. The braid is pretty much just to keep it from tangling.

If my hair is long enough (& thankfully it is right now) I'll pull it into a low-ish pony & then braid that. I haven't ever bothered with pulling that into a bun or anything - I've been known to swish it across my back (think horse's tail, sadly enough) to scratch my back or shoulders. When it's shorter, I have to do the little pig-tail-like nubbins on either side. It makes the aero helment look slightly entertaining & probably kills some of whatever minimal advantage there is (or I could just lose 10-15lbs...but whatever) but I can't just leave it flop around & those little nubbins are the best way to tame it. I have done the two pony-tails & braided them which produces entertaining results...like the "war braids"...I think I might've pulled those up Leia-style, can't remember.

Either way, I'm a hot mess by the time I take my bike helmet off, luckily I usually slam on some type of running hat or visor so I can minimize the damage.

Makeup for tris....not so much unless, like someone else said, it happens to be leftover that I didn't take off the night before. I'll throw on some mascara before a marathon (clinique waterproof curling is wonderful) but that's in the hopes that I can look human AND to curl my eyelashes up & off of my sunglasses. Any day I'm in the office though (like now) I'm playing the corporate gig & "dolled up" like a good girl. (puke)

Regardless, the race photos are always awful...so it's a moot point. My toes are ALWAYS a super bright, obnoxious color, hands are typically pink & white with one obnoxious-colored tip...so I don't really do anything above & beyond for races...I'm full-time obnoxious, even in corporate america.

I wear makeup girlie! I don't do tris, only run and bike, so it's not as much of an issue. I also put on a little before I teach my early AM spin classes. I don't think it hurts to try to look professional for those. It's not a lot of makeup, just a little for the eyes and to cover up the bags, but it's effective and makes me feel more confident.

For the ladies who don't wear makeup, or rarely wear makeup (and I don't mean in races) - why not? Is it too feminine?

Re: Do You Wear Makeup in Races [YaHey] [ In reply to ]

I wear make-up. It just looks very natural, not like I go in a fight with the MAC Cosmetic counter and it won. I just don't wear make-up when I race or train.

It's a time consuming pain in the ass that's not terribly good for your skin, and I can't be stuffed to deal with something that doesn't really serve a function.

I never understood women that don't wear makeup. It's like statement against looking feminine, or not caring about what their man thinks.

Re: Do You Wear Makeup in Races [YaHey] [ In reply to ]

So the man who married me never having seen me in makeup should expect me to do so once we're in a relationship? Frankly, he's happy I don't bother with it - less time spent getting ready to leave the house, and I look the same when I wake up/before bed as I do the rest of the time. No "holy crap THAT's what was under there?" surprises.

As for looking feminine, meh. I seldom wear skirts or dresses, either.

Cheers!

I was wondering when you were going to turn into a jerk and there it is.

+++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is my wholehearted agreement with Mistress K! I've never met you but I like your attitude!

My hubby saw me in makeup on our wedding - over 20yrs ago and I can probably count on my fingers and toes how many times I've worn makeup since. Makeup & skirts have nothing to do with feminity, who you are or what you can do. It is a personal preference that women should do for themselves.

it *is* not caring what their man thinks, but it's not a statement. One is being yourself, the other is feeling the need to defend it.

Totally different.

The men I know think I rock because I can ride as hard as them, swear as hard as them, blow better snot rockets than them and tell them to HTFU and get out there and train when it's dark & cold. They don't give a shit about whether I'm wearing make up or not and hot women according to them have hard muscles that can do stuff, their own boobs and their own mind.

What kind of goons are you hanging out with???

WTF do you mean by 'feminine' anyway? This is a great example of feminine - an amazing woman & an inspirational athlete that men & women alike admire. Get out of your narrow mind and into the real world.

It takes me less than 10 minutes to do a little concealer, some mascara, a little liner, and a little eye shadow. Curl the eyelashes and Burts bees colored lip balm and I'm out the door.
