Di2 Experts...Cable Usage Question
I'm new to Di2. I purchased the new GRX group. It came with the Y-split cable, which typically plugs into junction box under the stem. However, my group came with the handlebar end junction box. I want to wire the front the same way GP Lama did in the video below. In this video, he routes the left shifter cable internally through the bars to the bar end junction box on the right side.

Here is what I did: I do not have a cable long enough. To avoid buying the cable, I just used the y-split cable. Nothing plugs into the 'Y' part. I charged up the battery and every thing seems to work (I have no chain on it yet) but the FDR and RDR do shift with the shifters.

Before I tape everything in place and put bar tape on, is this a legit set-up or will leaving the port open on the "Y" split become an issue in the future?

No issue. That extra branch is wired in parallel, so it is just an innocent open circuit. I would tape over it or put a plug in it just as that little extra measure to protect it from the elements.

Faaaaaaaak I forgot to put a plug in it. I'll have to pull it out. The inside of my bars are not smooth at all so it's a PIA to thread through even with a routing kit.

If it's in sheltered in the bars (or frame) and you don't plan on riding it through water, you should be OK without a plug. I've had a junction box without plugs covering it on the outside of my bike without problems.

Based on the pain level of extracting and reinserting, I would not worry about it. The thing the plug prevents is an inadvertent short circuit. The risk is very low inside the handlebars-- it would have to be either water or a small piece of metal. If your handlebars take on enough saltwater to short a Di2 cable, you have bigger problems.

Plug it, it's worth the time/effort.
I had a battery drain issue that I was eventually able to trace to an uncapped input getting contaminated, and I sure as hell wound up wishing I had just gone back and put a cap on when I realized I had forgotten to do so when building the bike.
