Custom orthotics for ankle and knee pain?

Hi everyone! How is your training keeping up with? I hope things are going well for you. I just wanted to know some information regarding the custom orthotics treatment I found on the internet. I'm a daily 'walker.' But it was quite recently I started getting ankle and knee pains. First, I thought it was a problem with my shoes. I was using a standard Kalenji. Even though I changed my brands, I still started facing the same problem. I didn't consult any specialists but just looked upon the internet. I read that it could be the functioning issue my feet faces, and the problem can be rectified with the use of proper custom made orthotics on the footwear. It seems like it could align the functioning of my feet. Can you people educate me about this?

Before splashing out on a pair of custom orthotics, spend the money for a just a consult with a chiropodist / foot professional, etc first to see if you really need them first.

I had the same recurring problems for decades, and then significant spinal damage amplified that.

I went in for custom orthodontist and based on gos evaluation went zeroed in on a single model of shoe for testing. Worked a charm - existing problems went away and the ones I usually got haven’t come back yet.

It is possible that custom orthotics could help- But you may want to try going the other way.
I started running this sumer after many years away from running. My knees were hating it. Even with a very slow ramp up.
I tried a minimal shoe- And I found that the reason that my knees hurt is that my feet "turned off" when inside of a supportive running shoe.
Moving to a minimal shoe allowed my foot and lower leg muscles to properly do their job so the body could properly absorb shock and put down power.

Like others have suggested consult a podiatrist to see if you need them. If you do need them they can design the orthotics to fit you exactly and rectify any problems.

I have been wearing podiatrist orthotics for ~ 20 years. I went from thinking that I would never be able to run again to finishing IM's and ultras.

Custom orthotics will not solve every thing. You still need the right shoes for you. You still need to do exercises to correct and imbalances and strengthen muscles and tendons.

Got custom insoles made. They are great. Instantly reduced knee and hip pain and plantar issues. Use them for heavy hikes, runs and in my bike shoes as well as work boots. BUT I also walk barefoot / five fingers as much as possible to work those small muscles in the foot. As said before the insoles treat the symptoms but they don't fix the underlying issue.
