Converting Road to Tri
What are the best things to do? What is the best way to do it, granted it will be far from perfect. I've got a 61cm Bianchi XL Titanium from '03 with a 72.5 degree seat tube. More geometry/pics here:

It would be great if I could spend $$$ on mostly transferable items so that when I get a nice tri frame, I'll have a group waiting.

It might be easier than you think. I wouldn't do the full forward seat post, etc. stuff on a road bike like this one especially if you're a tall long leg guy. Converting a road bike will often throw off the handling. I personally think it works better with compact frame road bike. That's the principle behind the Cervelo Soloist.

If you want to go this route get a neutral set back post and put the seat forward on the rails to no more than about 75 degrees. Look on the articles in the tech section and there is a chart explaining how to measure this by plumblining your saddle tip over the BB.

But it may not be the way to do it on the Bianchi.

Instead consider the "big slam" position. It's explained quite in this article by John Cobb. Read it over very carefully. Entirely different because he suggests moving the seat back and down a bit.
