Convert old rear disk to front disk wheel?
Quote | Reply
Hey there, can i get an old 7 speed disk wheel and convert it to a front disk wheel by simply swapping out the axle for a shorter one?

BTW the race I'll use it for never has any wind, and the race organizers say that it is okay.

thanks

Just because something is allowed, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Good point by craigwsullivan.

Be sure to try the thing out first. The likelihood is it will be OK for you, and you will be pretty darn fast. experience is the key here. Try it away from traffic first. be careful.

I think it depends on the disk. If you have something like a HED or Zipp thread-on disk, you can buy a new axle to get it to work.

If you've got a cassette hub or if it's an obscure make (Sugino, etc.), you're probably out of luck. You might want to try a CH Aero cover instead.

Whats your concern craig? That I'll get blown in the wind?
Ofcourse i wouldnt race on it until i tested it several times on the local American River bike trail. I weigh 170lbs and as stated the course rarily has wind and even less likely at 8:30a when the race time is.

Anything else i should be concerned with other than wind?

let me know
