Colorado Vacation in late May
The wife and I are spending next week (last week in May) in Colorado. Our current plan is to spend half the week in Boulder and half in Breckenridge.

However, the weather in Breck looks pretty dreary and colder than I expected for doing anything outdoors, so I'm wondering if we should just stay in Boulder the entire time. Any local Colorado folks with thoughts on this? I'm open to suggestions on other places to go as well instead of Breck.

It snowed in Denver yesterday.

That being said, it all depends on what you want to do in Breck. I imagine that the mountains are still socked in with snow above about 10,000 feet, maybe lower, but that lower trials will be clear. Could be 70 degrees up there by the weekend. I wouldn't go in the lake, but biking and running and hiking could be fine and even kind of adventurous with the low snow level.

But I would stay in Boulder just because there's a lot more to do generally.

Spring in the Rockies is about as unpredictable as it gets. For example, we got 8+ inches of snow in Colorado Springs last night.

If you're up for a drive, weather looks decent in Durango / Telluride / Ouray-- southwestern part of the state. 6 hour drive from Boulder, so maybe that's off limits, but it's the prettiest part of the state.

What are you looking to do? When do you get here and when do you leave?

Hike, bike, run, eat, shop?

I manage a site in Silverton. They just got a TON of snow (Saturday through yesterday). HardRock is already talking of canceling their July event. Locals are worried about losing tourism dollars because of the absurd amount of snow. Locals are reporting that the trails are still closed to even UTV use. And Lake City has a call for volunteers to bag sand for imminent flooding in the area. It's BAD.

Piggybacking in on this but Im coming to Boulder/RMNT for hiking between May 31-June 3rd. Im bringing microspikes and typical winter/spring gear but any tips for these particular conditions? Do you think the Mt. Evans road will delay opening?

Flying into Denver this Friday, May 24th, and leaving on Saturday, June 1st. We're looking to do everything you mentioned, and a day or two of guided fly fishing. Coming from Texas, we just want a change of scenery for a week.

I revised our plans a little so that we stay in Boulder most of the trip and only 2 full days in Breckenridge, just in case we have bad luck with the weather. Thanks all for the feedback - very helpful.

You can drive up to Georgetown on Saturday May 26th for the burro race and to visit this cool mountain town. Check out the Hotel de Paris up there, maybe take the short train ride if you're into that (get tickets online, will probably sell out). It's a bit cheesy and pricey, but some people dig trains.

In Boulder, the whole weekend has a festival going on and the Bolder Boulder 10k is on Memorial day. You can still register and it's a fun race, even to walk/run it. It will end in the stadium of CU and you'll see yourself on the big screen. Nice way to get a souvenir t-shirt. I have a food truck coming to our building so we can watch the race and eat. It's nice seeing the pro's run by.

If you're interested or want something to do indoors, the Celestial Seasonings tea company give free tours and that's interesting. 6 miles from Boulder.

Rent bikes from University Bikes. If schedules work out, I can ride with you if you need a guide. I don't know if Mt. Evans is open yet but I went riding up Trail Ridge Rd last week in RMNP. That tops out at 12,000, Mt Evans goes to 14,000. When I went, the last section was still closed to cars, so you may get to ride with only bikes and hikers on the road. I have a RMNP pass and can carry four bikes on my car if you want to do that.

Boulder has a lot of restaurants with happy hours. If you can do an early dinner, you can bar hop and try different appetizers or cheaper food and drinks.

The Casino's are an hour drive from Boulder and it's a nice drive for a day trip. You can combine it with a visit to Golden, possibly do the free tour at Coors.

I don't know what Breckenridge will offer but you could do a different hike or bike in Boulder every day.

Yea, got 3 inches of snow yesterday. Doesn't matter where you are, you got snowed on a bit. It's supposed to warm up into low 70's by Sunday. This is the latest I've had to shovel snow ever. It's been a cold winter. I know Ironman Boulder will for sure be wetsuit legal. It will be comfortable when you arrive, be sure to hit the Boulder Creek Festival Memorial Day weekend. It's like...crazy, lots of fun if you're from a small town & want to see a lot of art, crafts, wood work, kids fun stuff, rides, food, and many local wierdos. It's all around Pearl Street and the Creek path...many blocks of entertainment. Some don't like it, but I think it is really fun. Enjoy!

Trip was fantastic. If you chose your screen name based on the ability to live in Boulder, well done. I will definitely be back.

We changed our plans and stayed in Boulder the entire week. I went running along Boulder Creek most mornings, rented bikes from University Bikes, but my favorite bike ride was renting a gravel bike and riding north of town. So many miles of empty gravel roads. I did a little fly fishing just north of town and caught a few small trout.

And of course hiking on the west side of town. There is an endless amount of outdoor activity.

Thanks for the tip on the Bolder Boulder 10K. That was a really fun race. The festival that weekend was great as well.

As for lodging, we stayed at the University Inn for the first half. It’s a decent hotel, mainly because of the price and location. We moved over to the Boulderado for the rest of the trip and got a suite. Much much nicer hotel and even closer to Pearl Street.

This was my first stay in Boulder and definitely not my last. I’m already looking at if I can return later in the summer.
