Bike Brands for 5.0 ft woman
Hi,
I am looking for a tri bike for my wife who is 5ft even or maybe an inch less. It seems like many brands don't carry tri bikes that small. We would appreciate some suggestions!

Thanks

My wife is very small in stature also. Getting a good fitting tri bike is big challenge. Even the small bikes come with ridiculously long crank arms and some challenging geometries. I’m going to bet a 650 wheeled bike is going to the best starting place. You can still find the prior Cannondale Slice in a 650 wheel size that would be ideal for someone so small. I think up until like 2 years ago Cervelo made the P3/P2 in a 650 also. I am not aware of any current production of bikes in the 650 wheel size. You can try some of the really small sizes in 700 wheels but she will have likely contend with shoe overlap and other some other unique sizing issues with the bigger wheeled bikes in such small frames.

Because each person has different requirements for fit, I would suggest going to a very knowledgeable fitter that doesn’t have a stake in selling you a bike. For example the guys at 51 Speedshop. They will do a fit analysis on a fit bike and then can steer you in the right direction for a frame.

I am 5'4 and was fitted on a 51 Cervelo P2 and I know they make a 48cm.

Cannondale is another good brand that makes smaller sizes - I have a 48cm road bike.

Poster above is spot on - a fitter will definitely help find what size is perfect for her, just make sure it is one who is motivated in finding the right size for her. Slowtwitch has this database of fitters you could check out to find one near you.

If I was looking for a 700C tri bike for someone 5 foot tall I'd be looking at Cervelo and Felt because they seem to be the only ones that get the front end geometry right for smaller bikes.

With that said, Premier Tactical makes a 650C bike that you may be interested in.
I'm not sure anyone else is making a 650C tri bike any more.

My wife is 5'

Used to be Cervelo, Cannondale, Trek and Felt being the bigger players for a 650 wheel. Felt owed out but the giys at Kona Expo said my wife was too small for their smallest size.

She was going to run with Ventum and I know another 5' athlete with one that loves it.

Giant do some weird looking XS version of their bike with a 650 front wheel and 700 back. Sounds like a spares PIA to me.

Where are you, and how fancy of a bike are you wanting? If you're interesting is low cost entry level, there is a 9 year old, brand new (old stock) Cervelo P1, 48cm, 650 wheels, at the "Bicycle Peddler" in Wichita, Kansas. It was $1700 new, and last year they found a bunch in storage, and were selling them out for $1000. I know, because I bought a 58cm version. Last time I was in there, last week, they had two 56cm left, and the one 48cm. They said they've had some folks look at it, but it's so small, it hasn't sold yet.

I am about that tall. My advice is go see an experienced dynamic fitter and get her Pad X/Pad Y instead of looking at brand geometry. I am Pad Y under 490, and because that's my preferred position, I have very few options for a new tri bike, and I think zero options for a safe ride with 700 wheels that lets me get that low.

Well, depending on where you live my wife just today considered selling her bike. She is 5ft even. It is an orange Guru, easily the best looking bike in our household. She is not doing tris anymore and wants a gravel bike.

kind of a tangent, who makes CX/gravel bikes with 650c wheels? I seem to recall that Cervelo made 650c road bikes (circa 2010?), but they don't appear to do that anymore.

I see benscycle on ebay has some size 45 (650C) Cervelo P3 frames available. That and the premier tactical are the smallest carbon tri bikes ever made. Pretty much any other bike is likely to involve a compromised position.

Starting from frame is a great way to go for a petite rider as it means you can get everything right instead of dealing with oversized stock kit.

On the short end, I start with a fit first, get my list of options, and then shop. My last purchase, I actually found I was a good match for a widely available bike (a 48 P2/P3), which saved me some $.

Benscycle also has a new old stock (NOS) 650C P2 as well for a bit less money, those caught my eye recently while thinking about possibilities for my daughter. Interestingly, the reach for both 650C models is listed as 389, which is 8 mm longer than the current 700C 48 cm P2 & 3. Not sure why that should be as the 650C wheels should allow significantly shorter reach.

The tri bike that had the shortest reach is the old Trek SC XS, which unfortunately is no longer made and doesn't seem to be available as NOS, unlike the old Cervelos. My 5'0" wife rides an old XS 7.0 that's had almost every part upgraded, not sure what we'll do when it dies.

Based on the fit chart, the Premier XS certainly ticks the short reach and low stack boxes. However, short women may not need a very low stack to get a good aero position if they have short upper arms, this is the case for my wife, and the XS Premier is definitely biased towards low stack fits. Riding shorter cranks also dictates a higher stack.

It's unfortunate that the bike industry has pretty much killed the small 650C options. It's great that Premier has introduced one but I wish their stack range went a bit higher.

We can get the stack on the Premier XS Tactical up to 570 - 575 mm depending on installation of the tilt kit or standard set up. That is with the standard elbow cups and pads. Many athletes like to use large cups and thicker pads for longer races so that adds to the flexibility of the stack.

Some companies try and cheat the stack down by specifying long crank arms on their bikes. We use 155 crank arms with dual Inforcrank power meter on the XS because we think that is appropriate based on what we feel is correct bike geometry without toe overlap, no wheel base compromises, no crazy fork angles or trail numbers...etc...

We designed and produced the bike so that athletes 5'5" and under will get the same high quality ride feel and handling as taller athletes get. And, with our new 2019 wheels that are standard with the bike - we offer state-of-the-art 45, 88 and disc for the rear and 45 and 88 for the front - all 25 mm wide.

I agree - the bike is low. We wanted to get the stand over height right. Our Small overlaps the stack by about 15 mm but the top tube is too high in some cases - so there is a small gap for some riders where a Premier Tactical just will not work.

The geo changed for the 650 bike between generations

The first gen wasn't really making the most of the wheel size for reach, just lowering the stack.
2nd gen better on both (in terms of being a smaller bike).

The XS speed concept was 370,468 so actually the same reach as the Cervelo 45 once stack normalised. You might need to grab one of the Cervelos to put in storage against the day her SC dies...

The bike industry in general is terrible at bike sizing.

Felt makes the B14 in a size 47cm with 650 wheels. It's not the latest and greatest of triathlon frames but it is a solid bike with a competent component selection and at $2,100 it's one of the best deals on the market. I just received two of them from Felt for customers and they have more in stock.

Thanks, great info. So Cervelo fixed the geometry of the 650C bike with the second gen, then discontinued that size not long after. Sigh...

The only Gen 2 650C P3 Cervelo available as new old stock on ebay is over $1200, probably more than I want to spend for insurance for my wife, but thanks for the suggestion!
