Noticed this today. Way to go Brad!

USA Triathlon National Pro Championships

Press Release: USA Triathlon, the national governing body for the sport of triathlon in America, recently named the Auburn International Triathlon the national professional long course championships. The Auburn International Triathlon will consist of a 1.2mi swim – 56mi bike – 13.1mi run – the standard half-ironman distance. The race will take place on Saturday May 21, 2005, in the scenic Sierra foothill town of Auburn. Top professionals from around the world will contest the event for a purse of $5,000. The top-3 American male and female professional finishers in Auburn will qualify for the USA team competing at the 2006 World Long Course championships.

The professional competitors will join a field of over 500 amateurs competing for prizes in various age divisions. Racers will face a unique and difficult course. After a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Clementine (lauded by Slowtwitch.com publisher Dan Empfield as the “most scenic swim venue in the world), they will cycle 56 miles on course that heads east thru the Sierra foothill communities of Auburn, Meadow Vista and Colfax en route to the turnaround point at the 3,000’ elevation level in Magra. The 13.1-mile run course will be held entirely within the beautiful Auburn State Park, including portions of the historic Western States trail. Two challenging climbs could decide the qualifying spots on the run course.

In 2004, the professional champions were the American couple of male winner Tim DeBoom and female champ Nicole DeBoom. They reside in Lyons, CO. DeBoom is the two-time winner of the Hawaii Ironman World Championships.

For the Pros: We will offer a minimum purse of US $5,000, paid equally to male and female per USAT guidelines. The purse will be at least 5-deep with details will be announced closer to race date. Male and female pros will start together in the first wave (professionals only) of the race. Purse will be paid to all placed professionals regardless of nationality. World championships qualifying spots will be given to US racers only and passed down after declines. Top 3 male and female Americans will receive qualifying spots.

All pros are invited to attend the VIP dinner on Friday night free of charge. There will be a mandatory professional meeting on Friday evening before the dinner to discuss the course and professional rules. Please inquire about a home stay program in Auburn. We will accommodate visiting professionals on a first-come, first served basis. Email or call (530-888-9911) race director Brad Kearns for more information.
