For any of you planning to do the Assault on Mt. Mitchell this year, be aware:
Mudlides have closed the Blue Ridge Parkway east of Mt. Mitchell State Park, so the usual approach can't be used. A new route has been designed to approach the summit from the west. The new route is 110 miles and has an additional 2,000+ feet of climbing (that according to my Topo software).
Because of added traffic pressure on The Parkway on the weekends, authorities will not allow the event on its usual Saturday date. The event will now be held Friday, May 20.
