Arthur Lydiard passes away at 87
He trained world champions and popularized running as healthy activity for the masses. One of the most important people in creating the first "running boom", which in turn gave birth to triathlon.

Was giving clinics on training until literally the day he died.

Sad day for the running world.

I actually met him once when I was a wet behind the ears high school runner. One of the schools we ran against put on a clinic. That school, Loy Norrix of Kalamazoo, MI turned out a number of outstanding runners. Their coach was a big advocate of Lydiard. Their results are a testament to the soundness of Lydiard's theories.

He was scheduled to speak here in San Francisco next week; I guess I can take that off my schedule now.

My favorite Lydiard quote.

Reporter: "mr. Lydiard, what to you teach your runners about pain and pain management?

Lydiard: "My runners don't feel pain, they enjoy running."

I raced a local 10k a few months ago where Arthur was the official starter. He is/was a legend. He didn't say much but we all listened intently.

A few friends were coached by him in his heyday and they all still run pretty well.

Arthur was the father of the 70's running boom that has spread to our beloved sport of triathlon. All of us involved with endurance sport owe him alot.

Arthur Lydiard will be missed

I am very sad, I really don’t know what to say. I am at a loss, so too is the running world.

Arthur Lydiard was certainly an icon in our country. Think of the greatest athletic achievement in the history of your country. Now, imagine the majority of those achievements were attributed to the coaching and guidance of one person. Now, you have some sense of the magnitude of what Arthur Lydiard contributed to running and to the national psyche of New Zealand.
