Anybody remember thos "ST" cotton running shorts?
I was chatting with another fella in the store yesterday who has been doing tris since the early 80's and we were talking about what was cool back then.

Remember those Scott Tinley "ST" running shorts that were cotton and had those wild geometric patterns on the sides?

Man, those ruled. I still have two pairs and I still wear them. Those things rule. Anybody else remember those?

My dad has a pair of them. He also has an old ST racing singlet (which is really cool except for the hole in the back).

Tom,

I have a pair of red ones with a blue geometric panel on the split sides in the storage room right behind me...and I loved those loose crop tops too. I still would go for those mesh crop singlets like ST and Dave (Insport) wore circa 89. I know the recent tight lycra stuff is the way to go but...

Best top I own these days is the Desoto "evolution" sleeveless jersey.

light, not super tight.

Maybe we need a "retro" race? Oakley factory pilots, ST clothes, Centurion bikes and Scott DH bars.

Those shorts were awesome. I have a dresser with old tri stuff in it and tried an old pair of them on the other day - man they are short - Porno short. I still have a brand new pair of the ST swim trunks - black with the wild design cut ins. MIght have to break out the old school stuff at a costume required tri that I put on in the summers. Now if I could only get my skid lid back in round. Whre's my V1pro.

Tom I actually was planning on going "retro" in 2005 when I turn 50. I was going to race on a steel frame road bike with "normal" wheels and old school clip ons.

However I can't see leaving my aero bike at home and racing a slower bike just for old times sakes, what sort of sense would that make? I'm not that sentimental I guess, maybe when I'm 60.

My son rides a Centurion Comp T/A with Shimano 600. It was either going to the trash or we could take it home and have our way with it two years ago. It cleaned up nice and he has done several races on it. The bike went on GOBA this summer and he had a great time with it.

They made some quality stuff at a good price. I loved the cycling shorts. They were like 20-25 bucks. I was able to get a lot of miles on those. Minimalist chamois and did not wear out.

Someone needs to bring stuff like this back. We just don't need the neon colors!

Thanks, sitting here in my ST running shorts after the am run, I am now feeling really old. Then, I remembered that I still have a Dave Scott Insport singlet as well. The Centurion (carbon/flexy flyer) frame is in the garage. My panic attack is starting, until now I never felt like an "old timer" in the sport. Gotta run, my life insurance agent is waiting.

What about the "cool" factor of having a free matching seat cover that came with the ST tri shorts! I lived in those short in the 80s....

Anyone remember a company called Rizzi's out of Florida. There order form had a check box for color that said send me your wildest. Gotta love that!

You bet. I had a pair of those. I also had a few pair of "ST" tri-shorts with that same pattern on one leg and solid on the other.

That photo, if I recall correctly, is from the 1985 Bud Light USTS Series Detroit race. It was a one year event and myself and my then girlfriend, a fine young lady named Carole Gehringer, were the chairmen of registration for the event and we helped Charlie Blanchard- a fixture in Michigan endurance sports, put the race on as one of his many volunteers.

Big fun. I think I did 26 triathlons in 1985 and 24 in 1986 including Hawaii IM and the then classis Hilton Head USTS National Championships. Those were the days....

What am I saying!?! These are the days!

My favorites. I still have a few pair. Unfortunately, the elastic is shot for some reason. Just can't bring myself to throw them out.

That looks like a homemade race number belt in that pic. Now days we pay between $6 and $8 for a piece of elastic band.

I had a pair of the yellow ones which faded to a kinda mustard see through situation. Wore them every damn day. Low cut 3/4 split ass cheek revealers. If I threw those babies on today my training pals would ban me for the crime of making them unspeakably sick- not that I already don't, but this would put them over the edge.

I just found a pair the other day. Stuffed down in the bottom of a drawer. Found my TRI FIT neon green gecko jacket at the same time :~)

It is a shame that ST's clothing company went away. It had a lot of soul and history to it. I remember walking around in Kone with those shorts on and Oakleys and just thinking, "Man, I am ssoooo inside."

It was like the first real fashion identity of the triathlete. It remains one of the looks that defines the sport, although it's dated now.

I can't help but wonder what ST would have out now if the company were still around.

Hello Tom,

Now that you mention it what ever became of Carole? It seem like their is always one dominant female cyclist in Michigan at any one time and for a few years she was it, then poof never to be seen again.

Carole took a liking to a bag boy at a local fruit market, left me a note on the counter of our new house and moved out overnight and moved in with him. He was ten years younger and had a motorcycle.

What could I do? Realistically, she ws justified. We dated 11 years and I never married her. I spent a lot of that time in foeign countries saving the world or racing bikes. She should thank me for not marrying her.

To her credit, she married the fella and they have been happy ever after, which couldn't have been a better outcome. They're happy and I'm told they have a little one also.

Carole was a great athlete and a great girlfriend. She always supported me in everything I did, and that wasn't easy.

She stuck with me through thin and thin. In the early '80's when I broke my back in a parachuting accident she waited on me hand and foot while I recovered. It took nearly a year. When I had multiple knee surgeries in 1985 and '86 she helped me with my physical therapy and helped me bounce back fast.

Even though our break up was a bit messy on both sides (which one isn't?) I have nothing but fondness and gratitude for her. We shared a lot, and I mean a lot of great times. She had a fine sense of humor and was quite a beautiful thing with a knockout bod. Her family was wonderful too- great people. One was a big three V.P. and her sister is a famous Hollywood actress who has played alongside Burt Reynolds, Jack Nicholson and many others- you may remember her as the character "Fontana" the stripper from the TV series "Evening Shade" and from the series "Picket Fences". She also appeared in the movie "As Good as it Gets." and others.

Carole helped open Bikesport 12 years ago. Great girl. Last I heard she was living in Chicago but not invvolved in cycling anymore, which is a shame becasue she was an outstanding athlete, U.S. National Champion, multi-time USCF State Champion and a babe.

Thanks for asking- few people remember her.

Thanks for the update. One odd thing about cycling, its a small community. Between group rides and races you tend to see people all the time. Your not friends exactly, but your friendly until they move or take up another activity and boom you never see them again.
