Another Tri Suit Question
OK- I got a couple of tri suits on discount- a really cool Pearl Izumi one and a used TYR suit, plus a pair of tri shorts (yay work bonus!).

One thing I googled but couldn't find an answer to- do you train in your tri suits? I'm wondering what the longevity of a tri suit is or if it's not great should I be training in something else? I don't find the thin chamois to be off putting, so I don't feel the need to have a thicker bike specific chamois for comfort...

For me, my tri suits are too pricey to use for every day training.
I have worn them once in a while training to get used to them, but typically not much after that to keep them from wearing out too fast.

Definitely would not use them in the pool as the chemicals will eat them up.

There's also the "look" factor if you are out training in a full on tri suit, you might get a few raised eyebrows.
But hey, if you want to wear your tri suit out training, not worried about it wearing out, I say go for it.

Makes sense- I was able to get the tri shorts im wearing for like 50 bucks and my suits at like 60-80 bucks, so kinda in the price range of what decent cycling kits cost- maybe even a little less.

I don't tend to swim in them- I just swim in jammers.

I run and bike in mine almost exclusively, only because it's more comfortable than my running kit. I have yet to wear one out.

I tend to swim in old tri shorts... I have some specific trunks as well, but I'll often use tri shorts from past season's kit for pool training... in terms of bike/run... if I'm doing brick sessions, I might train in a tri suit (again, I tend to use older tri suits), but otherwise I tend to use cycle and run specific clothes for those disciplines... If you want to use a tri suit more in training, use it on the bike, and then slip a cycling jersey over top, then nobody can tell you're not wearing bib shorts, and it looks less dorky...

I have found it depends more on the brand and then how you wash/dry it. I love to train in mine as they are so comfortable and durable, plus that is how I will race. I seldom train in my actual race kit though, but a duplicate. Some brands and the quality are so much better, but they will not be found at your price point. You usually get what you pay for.

Use them (except sparingly in swimming pools).

I bought six, at a good price, thinking that they would be super fragile. Only the most used three (of the six) are showing a little sag mainly in the crotch area (not an issue though on the bike or if I keep on moving. I even have one of the six unopened and unused five years later.

At 64, I feel like an idiot for having five trisuits that I might use a 10-20 times a year. They are not wearing out.

Indoor Triathlete - I thought I was right, until I realized I was wrong.

I wear them when I get closer to races to get the feel of them again. I don't swim in them in a pool......open water only.

EMILIO'S FIRST LAW OF TRIATHLON: Never wear, use, or do anything in a race that you have not worn, used, or done repeatedly in training. It is called training for a reason, you are not only physically and mentally preparing your body for the race, you are also preparing your bike, clothing, nutrition, and any other equipment, to perform as you expect. When the expectation is met, then on race day you are able to think about the race and not about the equipment. We welcome your comments, questions, and of course please share! Totally agreed (I'm a 31x marathoner, I'm very used to this). Was more trying to get a feel for longevity of wear of the tri gear.

Longevity and wear depends on the brand quality combined with the care you give to your garments. This below is another blog I wrote:
