Aero helmets with the best forward visibility?
I've got the head tuck down pretty well with my new position thanks to the TriRig Alpha X bars, but I can't maintain it with helmets like the S-Works TT or the Giro Aerohead that block the top of my field of vision. (Sorry for the crappy quality, it's a screen grab from a video).

The Evade works pretty well, but are there other helmets that have comparable forward visibility?

POC Cerebral? Oakley ARO? Smith Podium?

Thanks!

Can’t you just rotate the Aerohead up...problem solved

I going to be the first person to say why are you so low? I think aero advantage hit maximum well before that height and holding that position partly due to vision over any distance must be a tough gig?

I seriously created a monster. Lol.

Look at the new Oakley.

To Shambolic...Andrew aero tests his position quite often with his own self-developed software. He's worked himself into that position over time, and for him it's not about being low as much as it is getting his shoulders super narrow.

Haha you really did, Jim! I cringe when I look back at the pics of me when I first came to see you.

I will take a look at the new Oakley. Even I shudder at shelling out $700 for a helmet...

It's a fair question. I've only used this position in an Olympic so far, but I had my lifetime-high power so I'm not too worried that I'm making sacrifices there. I'm sure the tuck is a little exaggerated too in this pic since I'm at the velodrome testing.

Maybe I can find a way to keep it from sliding down my forehead. Whenever I hit a bump, it resettles. I have a tiny head so even the size small seems to be slightly too big.

Based on that pic I won’t be coming to either of you for a bike fit...

Jim,

Is that (with an aero lid) his best .cda position?
Thanks!

No idea. Andrew has really evolved his position since the last time I saw him. My fit for him was much more conventional.

This does, though, bring up an interesting topic. As Andrew indicated, he put out his best power in that position, but it took time to get himself there. It was an evolution, and I've seen other athletes do the same. How many are willing to put in that kind of effort/time? If you could reduce your CdA by 30-40 watts, and power was reduced the same, why would you do it? However, if you could adapt to that position over time to the point where your power would return, would you have the patience to do it? I use the term "you" generically, so not addressing you directly
Perhaps I'll begin a new thread to discuss this further.

Take a look at the MET Drone Widebody. I recently switched helmets because I grew tired of having to rotate my Bell Javelin back when tucking my head (oh, and it was time to replace it after 6 years...) - it's nowhere near as extreme as yours though. The visor on the MET goes extremely high - my vision is limited by my brows rather than the top of the lid. I think it's been designed with a turtling in mind, so I have perfect vision even from a low position.

Some have already said it, but rotating the helmet back is the best trick. However, if your head is small enough where it drops back down then I guess you're up a creek there.

I have a small head (size 7 with a high fade, but marginally larger with my current mop) and use a small POC. It's a great lid that gives me a much larger FOV than the selector (size small) that I raced in before and the Smith I tried on at my shop. The smith also looked and felt bigger than what the POC does. The POC also fits and looks larger than the sector too. I've raced in the Bambino and didn't like how big and loose that fit.

I've rotated all lids up to give me the best vision and in that position the POC wins by a big margin.

Since your back rises up above your head, that might be why helmets with tails obscure your vision- your back may be pushing the tail up. I have no problem keeping an aerohead pushed back far enough but I can easily see that might not work for you. In fact for me, the lower I hold my head, the further back the helmet can go!

Perhaps a snub tailed helmet like others have suggested would work better for that reason.

Your cockpit is too low. You shouldn’t have to tailor your helmet choice to a bike fit. Your back is hunched because the fit isn’t natural. You might get good numbers but there is a better more natural and more comfortable fit than that for you.

That's a really good point that I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't considered!

funny...i went for a ride with my aerohead on with my rotated upward extensions and when i tucked my head for my aero position, the front of the helmet bounced off my arms. surprised myself

i agree with back pushing helmet forward in OP position

Just curious what you've settled on. I have the same problem, in that, I keep my head pretty low and my forward FOV is often obscured by either a helmet or glasses.

As ridiculous as it sounds, the visibility offered by the ARO7 (Oakleys Tri/TT lid) is not good. They put a bloody great magnet right in the middle of your eyeline. Fine when stood, looking forward but when tucked it really inhibits your view. Shame, I love Oakley and have an Aro5 and it is brilliant

I found the ARO7 to be really good, although it looks like jayski found the opposite. I'm very happy with it though. Haven't yet raced in it, just done a few TTs in it.
