So, never done one of these challenges...
Just wondering if the winner get anything besides a faster 5k split and/or cirrhosis of the liver?

I got neither last year...somehow my January blood work came back in range. My speed did improve though but can't vouch about the 5k time since I haven't raced in ages - I think I moved up a Vdot or two.

Yeah I had a fantastic run split at IMNZ - and most of that was due to my miles in Dec (Jan was bike month). As for my liver, well, it's never truly recovered ;-)

So I'm explaining this challenge to my wife

Wife: "Let me make sure I understand. You're going to drink more than normal so you can get enough points for a challenge on Slowtwitch where you don't win anything.
Me: "Exactly."

I broke down. I'm logging on ST... just for this challenge. I've got a january marathon, so my running mileage should be pretty good in Dec. As for the 2nd part of the challenge; at 134lbs- I'm just not competitive on that playing field. I drank too much last night tho'. :)

As a co-winner last year, I am here to wish you all the best of luck! However, choosing not to participate this year. Need to drop 40lbs by my April mary and I've been making last December look like nothing lately, so Mrs. Quads and I have banned alcohol from the house for awhile.

Have fun!!

I'm sorry! The Cup is solely mine this year! I shall miss the competition, you were a truly worthy competitor.

Well, that didn't last long...I'll be the rabbit on the drinking side. However, I think my longest run of the month will be about 10 miles at E pace, so there's not a shot at the title.

Started the day with 2 screwdrivers, thinking about a run later but the Bengals/Steelers game is on in an hour....

Oh, we have some Baileys left over from Halloween (Peach Schnapps, Baileys, and grenadine, the nastiest looking drink ever). Think I'll go fix Mrs. Quads a coffee and Baileys right now.

Welcome back! We knew you couldn't resist. I suspect my run mileage will be significantly lower than last year. 200km is achievable, 200mi probably not. Today is an off day after a brutally hard 10km XC race yesterday. Now....where did I leave that Baileys.

I've got my fall marathon in exactly 6 days..woot. Hoping for a 3hr40min. We'll see.
So, i'll be a little light on miles ( & booze) until then as I taper.

And running a little fatass 50k on new years eve, so watch out!

Got officially laid off today, should be interesting to see how the rest of the week fares drink-wise. Mrs. Quads is heading out of town Friday AM which will severely curtail it this weekend; will need to be sober enough to get the kids to the emergency room (it happens).

Got a 6 mile run in this morning. Cruise control kicked in which is nice, considering I'm hauling around an extra 7 bags of potatoes and had only run about 30 miles between March 13 - Dec 1.

of course there is the regular frozen white russian, which is the regular ingredients mixed with ice in a blender.

But then there is the Ultimate "Thats What Im Talking About" Wicked Good Frozen Christmas White Russian:
1 part pinnacle "whipped" vodka, 1 part peppermint mocha kahlua (but i add a little extra splash of this), 1 part cream (i use Vanilla flavored soymilk to keep calories down)
But heres the kicker....I freeze the soymilk or cream in ice trays to combine in a blender, so there isnt a chance of getting it watered down...but you could always add a bit more liquor.
Combine ingredients in a blender and go!

also good on the rocks! if its too sweet, use regular vodka instead of the Whipped.

Sorry to hear about your job! Especially because I will now have to give up any prayer of catching up with you on the drinking. ;) In all seriousness, though, that sucks.

That wasn't going to happen anyway!! I think Otto is the favorite this year though.

Wasn't too bad of a night, and up at 5:30 this morning for 5 miles on the dreadmill.

EDIT: And, somehow, I've managed to lose 8 lbs. since December 1. Go figure.

OK, so I've only been keeping up with the drinking side of the challenge... I'm not much of a runner to begin with and out of shape this season even by my meager standards on top of that, so the expectations were minimal at the outset. But then, on Day 2 of the challenge, I clumsily dropped a roll of paper on my foot at work while re-loading our large-format plotter (3 ft wide by about 10-12" in diameter, so essentially a fair-sized log, only denser than raw wood) and fucked up my left big toe, so that's my new excuse for not running lately (other than just being a fat turd).

On the plus side, I've always been counting my typical after-dinner whiskey mix as a simple double (short juice glass + a few rocks + a generous slosh = close enough; I hate being That Guy who rides an 8-ft wave and estimates it at 15+). So the other day I'm playing with the ratios to optimize the current blend (always trying new stuff as well as old faves; sometimes get a clunker that requires masking flavor while at the same time trying to use it up promptly) and I resort to busting out the jigger for proper measurements... turns out 3 honest shots only gets to about 2/3-3/4 of the stock glass so I've really been drinking at least triples all along, if not quads for a full glass (esp since the last increment doesn't draw extra ice).

So at least I got that going for me, which is nice....

Nice work everyone - so far we have some serious miles and serious drinking going on...

The top 20 runners have 50+kms logged, the top 10 have 68kms and change++.

The top 20 drinkers have 8+ drinks, the top 10 have 24++. Major difference between FOP on the run side vs. the drink side.

Notables on both sheets (top 10 on both sides):
  • ironeric: 71.7k and 28 drinks;

  • WVTRIMAN: 73.33k and 32 drinks (leading the combined challenge at this point).
I got ~20k on tap tomorrow, plus pub dinner after work..... ;-)
