3T Exploro bottom bracket removal problem
Quote | Reply
I bought a 3T Exploro last year that I've been very happy with overall. However, the press fit bb needs to be replaced at this point and I'm having big issues removing the old one. One side went out after using more force than I'm comfortable with but the other side won't budge at all no matter how hard I hit the damn thing with the removal tool and an assortment of other more sturdy things.

I bought the bike preassembled by 3T and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience removing the BB from those bikes? I've removed plenty of press fit bb's before but never had anything stuck like that. Are they using loctite/glue during installation? Any ideas on how to solve this?

Riding the bike with the current bb is not an option now either unfortunately..

What are the bb cups ? Aluminum or plastic ?
They may have used loctite In that case use a heat gun/ hair dryer and heat it up.
You can also lay the bike on its side and let some penetrating oil work it’s way in than give it a good wack or many wacks

Hit the bottom bracket with a metal bolt/rod with a big hammer to tap it out.

Plastic. I've drenched it in WD40 which hasn't helped. Will try to heat it up gently next.

I've been using a heavy steel tube and a sledgehammer to whack it out. I can't see how I could possibly use any more force than that and it's still not moving even a mm.

Cups are retained with locktight 480.
It should tap out easily using the proper tools.

I was. It didn't do anything so I moved on to more heavy duty things to hit the bb with, which also hasn't helped unfortunately.

It should tap out easily, which all pf bb's I've worked on before has more or less. This however is not moving at all even applying a ton of force applied evenly across the bb.

can you knock out the actual bearings? sometimes that can let the plastic shell come out a little easier if the bearings are out.

How is the frame positioned when trying to tap the BB out, in a work stand?

Try laying it on its side with something like a couple blocks of wood underneath the BB area to support it. -Then- give it a good whack from above with a heavy hammer onto your bearing press tool.

Might also try some real penetrating stuff like liquid wrench, rather than WD40.
