2004 Dura Ace and Compatibility w/Ultegra
Quote | Reply
I was told by a local rider that I would be ok with a 2002/3 set of Ultegra STI shifters and a brand-spanking new 2004 Dura Ace rear derailluer. Although recently I'm wondering if I was led astray. Any thoughts? TK

Yes, I think this will work fine (assuming you need a new rear derailler and will upgrading to the DA 10 speed slowly as things wear out).

Get a 10-speed chain....the derialleur is designed to work best with that.....other wise you can mix 9 speed with 10 speed.

The 10-speed chain will work with 10-speed and 9-speed cassettes.....but having a 9-speed chain with a 10-speed is a no-no.

If you check out the Shimano site the new Dura Ace 7800 rear der. is 9 and 10 speed compatible. It's what I use for a rear der. and everything else is 9 speed.
