2002 105 Compatible w/newer Dura-Ace
Just bought a brand new set of Dura-Ace 8/9 speed bar end shifters. The sticker on the rear shifter says "compatible with RD-7700(9s) & RD-7400(8s)". Is that just the optimal compatibility or will it work with my old 2002 105 rear derailleur as well? Should I just buck up for a new rear derailleur? I could probably use one anyway.

In friction mode they will work with anything.

Yes, I suppose that would make sense. So for good click shifting I'll need a new RD?

That shifter will index shift 9-speed with all Shimano SIS rear derailers except the 7400. The old Dura-ace indexing was not compatible with other Shimano prior to 9-speed. No need for a new rear derailer unless your current one is broken or worn out.

Not the derailleur you need to be concerned about, it is the spacing of the cassette. IOW, the cable throw per click on the shifter must move the derailleur exactly one cog on the cassette. So the "spacing" of the shifter must match the spacing of the cassette. If the cassette is 8spd or 9spd (like the shifter), it should be fine.
