Agreed on MvdP. Even the way he pumps up hills looks so much more fluid.

Man, these guys are close. MdVP slightly better at hopping. WvA slightly better stair climber. That's about it.

Looks like they've brought out the hors categorie level barriers, 40 cm, IIRC?

MvdP is doing a lot of leading on a day with heavy wind and on a fast course (29 kph after 7 laps). Maybe that might sap him a bit?

I didn't get a good look at start/finish (just joined on lap 7), but seeking shelter in the wind might play a role here.

Were the wind a non-factor, this would seem to be MvdP's race to lose

also, interesting undertitle battle for 3rd

I cannot wait for MvdP to put that ride up. Wout tactically messed it up from the prime position IMO and when Mathieu unleashed that violent kick, it was already too late.

It was so damn tight. MvdP edged him like 6 or 7 of the 10 times around the barriers, Wout always closed by the steps. Then one major acceleration up the incline mid race that Wout had to close. I think that was it.

And agree with Martin, the crowd was insane.

If Wout hadn’t have slowed up before the sprint he would have won. Should have sent it once they hit the tarmac.

He might still have lost, but it certainly would have been the smarter move.

Yeah, Wout has an amazing WT sprint, but he doesn't have MvdP's jump. When Mathieu refused to lead into the barriers the race went off script and the speed fell. Wout got played.

Yeah, looked like MdVP just had more snap on the day, but that wasn't the time to play match sprint games.

Great early season south-ish France racing at Besseges yesteday. Had it all: power wagons pushing the break in BIG winds, rollers and a tough uphill finish. Powless is rolling well. The break was loaded with beasts with Mads the alpha beast. Those guys in the break were blowing. The good news is you're in the break with Pedersen. The bad news is you're in the break with Pedersen. Trek killed it for their guy,

So he beat Wout van Aert in a two up sprint, but did it wrong?

yep, it's 40cm. they're a bit close together and on an uphill, too, which would be really grisly after half an hour!

No, it’s a recognition that MvdP was able to capitalize to a greater extent because of slight miscalculation on the part of WvA.

This was always MvdP’s best move should it come down to a sprint, but likelihood of success of the move is situation dependent, and WvA’s slight miscalculation increased the likelihood of success.

But for MvdP the match sprint was perfect.
Mathieu usually has more snap, Wout is better at long, fast sprints. My jaw dropped when Mathieu didn't attack the barriers on that last lap ("Everyone expected me to..." including Wout.) When Wout didn't attack after the barriers, when the pace fell, Mathieu had it won, and he knew it. Brilliant.

Ha. No, I think we're saying Wout did it wrong despite already being in a bad tactical situation.

dang - its hard to get stuff done with all the great racing. maybe good i didn't know about colombia rr until after the fact.
got to see Powless on some local terrain shredding local 2-4 minute hills last day before labor day (md pro cycling classic). when he snagged the super prestigious spooks hill kom while splitting the race winning break in half - well he had to be a new top 5 favorite rider. he's only making it easier to like him now!
hopefully a little break before omloop and strade so i can get some things done!
