(possibly) Late for IM checkin - what's my move?
So I just took a look at the athlete guide for IMTX and realized the reservations I made months ago may not get me to the site on time for checkin on Thursday (though i definitely will make it by the athlete briefing). Do I:

1) Contact them tomorrow and plead ignorance (guide wasn't up when I made reservations, first IM, etc etc)
2) Wait until I actually do have a problem and plead emergency on Thursday (I'd say 50/50 I get there on time, but any substantial flight delay or car rental snafu sinks
3) Accept that I'm probably fubar'd now and start changing hotel/car/flight/work arrangements and try to get there a day earlier

Anyone ever deal with WTC on something like this? Still finding it hard to believe there's no checkin on Friday.

Let me know ASAP. They are usually reasonable about it if you contact them.

As far as no Friday checkin goes that is standard for all IM. It's been that way as long as I've been in the sport.

Not to be a dick but the latest check-in for all North American IM events is always two days before the event. Always.

You could've looked at the schedule for 2011 & 2012. They also leave the previous year's schedule up for reference before they make the current year's schedule. It really is your fault for not paying attention to details.

That said, I would try #1. They might (and will likely) tell you tough shit so you'll have to go to #3. Showing up and trying option #2 will guarantee you'll be spectating on Saturday. It really is a hard and fast rule unless you got permission ahead of time.

You're absolutely right, it's my fault. I made a shitty assumption. The 70.3 events have day before checkin and I shouldn't have assumed it was the same for 140.6.

What I'm trying to gauge is how badly I screwed up, and how hard and fast they are about exceptions (with the hope of saving myself some hassle if they were at all lenient). And it sounds like they are serious, so I will be changing my travel arrangements.

Before you change anything shoot them an email. They may help you out. Doesn't hurt to ask.

according to the athlete guide:

"Athletes competing in IRONMAN events are required to check-in at the venue during the dates and times listed in the Athlete Guide
and Event Schedule. Athlete Check-In will not be available outside the posted times. Should an athlete have a legitimate emergency, IRONMAN will try to accommodate the athlete to the best of our ability as long as the athlete informs IRONMAN. To inform IRONMAN of any emergency during race week, athletes must call the EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER listed above. Athletes who show up after the posted check-in dates and times will not be allowed to race unless prior arrangements were made via the emergency phone. These rules are in effect for a number of important reasons and
exist to make your experience the best, safest and most stress-free it can be."

so, start brainstorming for a good emergency story that they will buy!

Yeah thats still a bunch of BS, based on the guy who came all the way from south america last year and wouldn't let race cause if I remember right something got screwed up with his flights. I'd look up the thread again but I really don't want to re-read some peoples pathetic ideas of what customer service should be for that situation.

One of my friends was stranded in the UK without a flight to IM South Africa a couple of years ago during the ash cloud crisis. The ash cloud eventually cleared and he got on a flight which landed him in South Africa the evening before the race. They let him register and build his bike in transition late the night before the race. He got it done, I suspect a lot is down to the individual race organizer.

DO NOT PLEAD IGNORANCE and hope they let you if you are late. Just let them know ahead of time. A while ago someone posted about a friend who was late to checkin and wasn't allowed to race. But other's have posted that they have called/emailed early and been allowed late checkin.

Ask them. If they say no change the tickets etc... (don't tell them this is an option or they'll probably tell you it's a great option).

if I remember correctly he didn't contact IM before he showed up on Saturday expecting to get his packet for a Sunday race. Not sure it would have changed the outcome, but he probably could have emailed them from where he was 'stranded' then they could have been prepared for his late arrival. That's what I got out of the thread, prior coordination prevents piss poor customer service or something like that :-)

Email them... Crazy to think you look to Slowtwitch for help instead of emailing the company putting on the race.

Don't they specially call out now during registration when packet pickup is and that you have to pick it up during that window?

At the inaugural St. George IM in 2010 I emailed the director and asked to check in on Friday (I was on in-hospital overnight ICU call until Friday morning) and they allowed me to check in late. It never hurts to ask, so send them a humble, apologetic email and see if they'll make accommodations.

not to hijack this thread, but does anybody know why they do this.

I was just at Wildflower and they have a AM check in right before the race. Worked like clockwork for me.

This stuff ain't rocket science, so I wanna know why???

I saw this on a white board in a window box at my daughters middle school...

When I did my first IM in 2008 I didn't get there in time and it wasn't a big deal at all. I know things have changed since then. Hell I remember getting actual schwag then!

who's smarter than you're? i'm!

Hahaha,I am pretty amused by some of the things that people ask here when a very quick check of Google would have their questions answered in a fraction of the time....
