And look at it this way-we can laugh at all the people who wanted it to be wetsuit legal whose races were ruined because they got on their bikes already overheated. Actually, I won't be able to do that since that will probably be me.

NO WETSUITS!

I am hoping the mid 80's Friday and 90ish on Saturday push the temperature up above 76. The only worry I have is how cool it has been during the night.

75.9 as of 11:00 PM.

Can we keep this thread on the front page until the official announcement is made on Sunday morning?

It's interesting. Within a span of 1 hour 18 minutes, when the air temp went down by 4 degrees, the water temp when up by 1.8 degrees. Tidal action?

Is it possible to swim the course? I may do that before registering this afternoon.

IIRC you can enter the water near Great Marsh park where the transition area is located. The course itself probably won't be laid out until late on Saturday.

If this is a non-wetsuit swim on Sunday, I'd say there's gonna be a lot of "bouy's" floating on the course!

75.0 at 11:00... going the wrong way!
winds have been NW as its been dropping. in the ocean at least its the direction of the winds that effect the temp more than anything else. and offshore (anything west on the east coast) wind blows the surface warmer water out and colder water from underneath upwells to fill in.
usually one day of easterly winds puts it back warm.

The RD doesn't make this call. The head ref will measure the water temp near the swim area right around when transition opens in the morning. Doing it then in shallow water means you will get the coolest temp possible for the race.

Up to and including 76.1F wetsuits are good. At 76.2F and above wetsuits are a no-go for AG awards and championship slots. You can still wear a wetsuit up to 83.9F but you go to the back of the bus and get your own wave at the end.

I think this thread shows that triathletes are the biggest wimps in all of sports. Wetsuits over 75 degrees? Grow a pair and man up. Leave the wetsuit at home.

I spoke with one of the race officials setting up the swim finish after swimming the course. The water is beautiful, dare I say, perfect. Of course, I swam it without a wetsuit.

The official explained to me the process as you described it and said a lot of athletes he spoke to were hoping for it to be wetsuit legal but that his fear was that the WTC official would be measuring in a spot that would be warmer than the rest of the water and he was offering to boat the official out to the middle of the course for a cooler reading.

Edited out all my self-serving whining.

anyone in the Cambridge area or been in the Choptank? any chance we can leave our wetsuits at home?

well, a lot of people got into triathlon for weight loss. wearing 5mm of neoprene in 76 degree water should get that done for you.

Why is this question necessary? If you want to leave your wetsuit at home nobody is going to stop you from swimming.
You have no need to worry about giving up a small bit of time to wetsuit wearers. Based on your 6hrs 19min finish at Eagleman 2010 you have no shot at an award anyway.

As for your comment about people getting into triathlon to lose weight, I know some of them who'll be finished and driving home before you reach the run turnaround.
