How about a "Best Use of Rear View Mirror" type of award?

Gotta go with Alex M McDonald, no one raced better than he did this year and he is a med student :

3rd place M25-29 at Cal 70.3
Winner of IM Lake Placid
Won numerous overall races on the East Coast
1st overall amateur at Kona

He was the best amateur hands down this year in the sport

This is a silly idea.

We already have a truly objective method for determing who the athletes of the year are - it's called a 'race.'

Alex M-M is great and so is Joe Bonness. Another to consider is Ben Collins, who after winning overall at SC Tri Nats then SC Tri Worlds, went pro for the final months of the season. Phillipe Kozub also had a strong season, including BOUS victory. Speaking of BOUS, Katie Ellis won that in a tight race after placing 3rd OA at SC Tri Worlds. Jenny Garrison had a shorter season, but delivered every time she toed the line, including OA victory at Tri Nats, and firsts every other race she did this year. For the Kona racers, Rachel Ross is hard to beat, but don't forget Bree Wee.

Yes, I too am on Facebook. And LinkedIn. And Twitter. Which begs the question - do I exist in the physical world? Do I?

Just waiting for the thread to pop up so I can nominate my friend Bree. I have made some friends here, but I think the STers need to know that she beat me every time we raced this year - which was often - and by a whopping 9 minutes at Kona, setting a new age group record in the process! Jennifer G. is awesome as well - but you know the STers and the whole IM thang.. no doubt she'd be kicking my butt at the long stuff as well if she went that way.

You need to be considered as well - just saw your gold medal at Worlds reported somewhere. Congratulations!

When you compare Alex and Joe, you need to consider the age weighting factor that Slowman sugggested up top. Alex is studly, but I am not sure he could put up Bonness times after 52 years on this planet and 40 something Ironmans, most in the 9:xx range regardless of course.

I tend to agree, especially concerning age-groupers. I think Joe Bonness, Alex M-M, Rachel Ross, Jenny Garrison and the other elite AGers have a pretty good idea of their position in the pecking order. I don't think they need us telling them.

Pros are paid to entertain us, so they're another matter. I would have liked to have seen how Bonness would have fared as a pro back in the early years of the sport.
