"Drilling it" ?
I am pretty new to watching bike racing (only been watching the tour since '99 and other Grands when they are on TV. Never been to one tho) so I may be out of touch. But is this "drilling it" a new phrase? What it its etymology? What is it's proper usage? Can i use it about any bicycling-related activity or is it limited to use only with regard to riding on pavé? Can you "drill it" up a mountain? Can I "drill it" while dropping my wife on our local singletrack? Will I be looked on with adoration at the start of the local hammerfest if I drop "drilling it" to describe the activity I wasted hours watching on the couch, just prior to being dropped while my compatriots "drill it?"

I take it there is some literary licence being taken there?

I am actually curious if this is a new or old analogy. Having used a hammer drill before, I could see how it might be used to describe riding on cobbles (besides "crazy stupid.")
