"A Well Constructed Margarita"
I was reading Dan’s article “Consistency killers” and as always Dan has a way of helping all of us do our very best in the sport of Triathlon, but in the paragraph, “Personal Habits,” Dan talks about a few of his habits that he has to watch out for and make some personal sacrifices in order to not overindulge in. One of the finer things Dan enjoys is a “well constructed margarita.”

So since this is a thread on consistent training, I’m curious, on your rest days when you have time to enjoy a margarita what is your recipe for a “well constructed margarita?”

Here’s mine:

2 parts 100% blue agave tequila
1 part coinstreau
1 part fresh squeezed lime juice
Shake & serve over ice and poor into a hand blown margarita glass rimmed with salt

Enjoy:

Personally, I prefer a shot to Paradisio from time to time. Less calories and sugar than the margarita. So smooth and goes down good. ;-)

Not technically a margarita, but one of my favorites is:

2 whole limes - fresh squeezed
1/2 orange - fresh squeezed
4 oz Tequila - Pretty much any 100% Agave Tequila works for me
Pour over ice

I went to get pizza at school the other night and they had what I think was meant to be margherita pizza, but it was on the menu as "margarita pizza."

I asked the cook why it didn't come with limes and she was all confused...

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

Excellent post.

As bikescott said, always use 100% agave tequila. I think Grand Marnier is an acceptable stand in for Cointreau...and always fresh lime juice.

Never use triple sec.
Never ever use margarita mix.

2 oz. teq.
1/2 oz. Cointreau (or Blue Curaco if you want a Turquoise one)
2 oz. lime juice
1/4 cup powdered sugar (I go just a little lighter usually)
splash of Orange Juice

Shake, serve over ice, then add a little Grand Marnier on the top of it. Yum.

Yes indeed. Those things go down way too easily. Next time I am definitely listening to him when he says to stay away from the 3rd pitcher!

Finally... a thread that truely blends technical and social engineering :)

definitely not a margarita but a great alternative:

in the neigborhood it's known as the Cat Walker but I'm sure after a couple you'll dream up a better name:

One frozen pounder filled with ice cubes

Two shots of vodka
Two shots of Rose's Sweetened Lime juice
Crushed quarter of lime,
and top off with some tonic water.

Just my contribution to bringing a little decadence to a warm summer afternoon.

this is very close to my own, just, i don't put in so much tequila (relative to the other stuff). and i leave off the salt. and i don't care who blows the glass, a man or a machine. one shot tequila, one shot cointreau (or grand marnier), juice from one lime.

here's the important part: it's got to be 100% blue agave tequila. no diesel fuel.

Agreed. I omitted the "100% blue agave" part in my recipe. I edited my post to reflect this very import part of a well constructed margarita.

Since you live in Cali try this sometime. Whenever we have someone coming back from there we have them bring us a case, it doesn't seem too last long ;-)

here's mine:

3 oz. good gin (I like Junipero, or Death's Door)

Enough dry vermouth to coat the glass

Shake the gin in a cocktail mixer with some ice. Cool the glass with ice, line it with vermouth, pour in gin. Enjoy with two olives.

Wait! You don't call this a margarita? Whatever you call it, I call it "delicious!"

Good lord that's a lot of sugar! For one marg? It must taste like a slurpee.

I go for the 2 parts good tequila, one part Cointreau, and the juice of one lime. No salt, no sugar. Strong and sour. Perfect.

I shouldnt be releasing this information but here goes...it's called the 6-6-6 and only works for blended margi's

6oz tequila
6oz limeade concentrate
6oz beer (yes beer) I usually use a mexican beer but anything will work, just dont use a stout or dark beer.

add it to the blender, fill with ice and blend to perfection.

That part is CRITICAL. If it's good tequila, you don't even need the lime or the coinstreau. Just a little ice.

sometimes you just have to eat the cake

LOL, desert dude explained to me the other night the difference between GOOD tequila and the not so good stuff.

I think it's cool that it is CACTUS!

sounds similar to 'summer brew' (or, if you prefer, 'skip and go naked')

add equal parts:

lemonade concentrate
vodka
beer

pour over ice

you could make it a drink at a time, but why not be honest, and save some effort - just make a pitcher!

and, for the record, it is good, despite how bad it seems like it should be.

...except it isn't. It's a succulent.

Seriously, "sipping tequila" isn't the oxymoron that it seems.

I am with you, JBR and Bigkens with the margarita alternatives. Tequila and I get along great. Shot after shot...we're like two peas in a pod. However, margaritas are not a drink of choice.

Not anything I made up myself, but I offer you the Moscow Mule...

Moscow Mule:

[*]Large pitcher
[*]Fresh mint sprigs
[*]Ice
[*]Ginger beer
[*]Your favorite vodka

First break up some of the fresh mint and toss in the bottom of the pitcher. Cut up some limes, and mash the limes and mint in the pitcher's bottom until nicely mushed and mixed. Then add vodka and ginger beer. GINGER BEER! Don't substitute with ginger ale. Ice. Pour. Serve.

I'll defer to Tyler Florence's demonstration...

I worked on this for two years, tried all different types of tequila, orange liquor, orange juice, sour mix etc. I love good tequila, but the goal was to come up with a recipe for a great margarita with decent tequila (not super expensive). Key is to pay attention to the brands, changing an ingredient really changes the drink. Here's the result, one of the best you've ever had, so try it:

1 1/2 part 1800 Reposado Tequila
1 part Montezuma Triple Sec
1/2 Lime squeezed fresh
3/4 part Daily's sour mix
splash of Grand Marnier

Fill a shaker with ice, the more the better. Run a lime around the rim of the glass and roll in kosher salt. Add ingredients, shake and serve.

I usually have four or five of them every Saturday in the summer, and then go on a long ride on Sunday to work off the cals.

Cheers!
