Pentagon doesn't see Iran bombing having much impact

It looks like if we ever do anything with Iran, we'll need to have boots on the ground. More and more, it is looking like Iraq has turned out to be nothing more than a big opportunity cost.

Pentagon sees Iran bombing as unsuccessful: report

Top Pentagon officers have told the Bush administration that bombing Iranian nuclear facilities would probably fail to destroy that country's nuclear program, the New Yorker magazine reported on Sunday.

The senior commanders also warned that any attack launched if diplomacy fails to end the standoff over Iran's nuclear ambitions could have "serious economic, political, and military consequences for the United States," the article said, citing unidentified U.S. military officials.

"A crucial issue in the military's dissent, the officers said, is the fact that American and European intelligence agencies have not found specific evidence of clandestine activities or hidden facilities; the war planners are not sure what to hit," according to the report.

I'm not exactly sure what "big opportunity cost" means. My own observation is that the Iranis are scared spitless that Iraq will rise from the ashes of Baathist rule to become a strong federal state with representative government, and that is the reason they continue to send explosives across the border.

They are already disturbed that senior Iraqi Shi'a clerics have taken a more secular view of government.

The increasing desire of young Iranis for more interaction with the West will only be fueled by a more secular, but still Muslim majority, state on along their border.

They are concerned that their oppressed Kurdish minority will take heart at seeing Kurdish participation in a successful Iraqi state.

A successful Iraq is our best tool for countering Irani aims in the region. Around here, everybody looks to the northeast with a great deal of suspicion. The Iranis may be Muslims, but they're Shi'a, and they're not Arabs. No Arab state completely trusts the Iranis, and many believe they are aiming to dominate the region. If we are careful in our dealings with Iran, we can take advantage of that mistrust.

Bombing Iran would be a very bad idea, even if we could pinpoint the nukes. If they get an operative nuclear weapon, I feel certain either the Chinese or the Russians will act in our stead, in spite of their dithering now.

I agree. Bombing Iran ("Bomb, bomb, bomb....bomb, bomb Iran". Hey....that's kinda catchy, if you sing it to the tune of the Beach Boy's "Barbara Ann", huh? ;-) wouldn't accomplish much. Nope, what we need is a full-on medieval-type ass-whuppin' delivered to Khatamei, Ahmadinejad and all the rest of those fenderheads.

More realistically, we should just let good old American-style capitalism and our mercantile mindset just seep, seep, seep into all their young folks' heads, because beneath EVERY Iranian young person is an American....just dyin' to get out! (hee-hee).

A few thousand Walmarts, KFCs, Blockbuster stores, and before you know it.....Branson, Missouri!! Yeah!!

The effect of West German television broadcasts on East German dissatisfaction with their lot before (and contributing to) the fall of Berlin Wall is well documented.
