Sony pictures has released the trailer for the new 21st James Bond movie, the retrospective, Casino Royale.
If there is any doubt about the new Bond, Daniel Craig, then the trailer puts it to rest. Craig is the real deal: He is Ian Fleming's early Bond.
When you look at the new Bond, you have to understand the original Bond of Ian Fleming's creation. This character was rough-edged and resourceful man. He lacked the polish and poise of the Hollywood Bond figures as interpreted very well by Roger Moore and even better by the new Bond standard Pierce Brosnan. The classic Bond that established the Bond phenomenon in cinema (the largest grossing movie series in film history at well over $1 Billion in sales at the box office alone not counting merchandising) are the celebrated Sean Connery films such as Thunderball, Goldfinger and others. This was a transitional Bond that established the link to a character who always kept his tie straight and his jacket clean. The original Bond was more at home in a fist fight than in a meeting with a Prince. This new Bond harkens back to that.
The pace, tenor and look of the early trailer is hopeful in the extreme. No blue screens. No pretentious special effects. It is raw, dangerous and exotic. Pure Bond. Daniel Craig is Dashing and angry, fit and manly. The women are devastating and beautifully dressed. The cars are fast and beautiful and the action is break-neck.
Bond films traditionally release on my birthday in the last two weeks of November. I have reason to hope for a very happy birthday with Bond 21 and the new Daniel Craig. The criticism levelled at the new actor appears utterly unfounded.
The countdown to November 17 has begun. Bond is back... way back.
