Anybody know for what period before and after totality I have to use eye protection?
I don't understand the question.
You should use eye protection any time you ever look at a non-totally-eclipsed Sun, regardless of whether a total eclipse is about to occur or has recently occurred.
So you don't ever watch a sunset? We seem to instinctively know that's okay but at a certain point in the sky we seem to know that it isn't okay to look more than a glance at the sun. It is almost like we evolved this ability. I am not telling anybody to stare at the sun.
